I have an old Windows NT 4.0 domain that was called "DOMAIN". I have a
Windows 2003 member server running in this domain. I was asked to turn
the 2003 server into a DC and get rid of the old server. They also want
the domain changed. Is it as simple as installing ADS on the member
server and then going to all the PC's and rejoining them to the NEW
domain I just created on the 2003 box?

You can do an migration that will migrate all resources such computers,
users, groups over to the new Windows Server 2003 Domain.

This article describes how to set up the Active Directory Migration Tool
(ADMT) to perform a migration from a Windows NT 4.0-based domain to a
Windows Server 2003-based domain.

I assume you've used this to accomplish what I'm talking about? With
only 20 users in the domain, I was about to just have them redo their
username/passwords.

Migrations are a fairly common phenomenon for upgrading from NT4 to Active
Directory or to acomplish a domain restructuring.

In your case I think it may just be worthwhile to upgrade your NT4 domain.
You would do this by upgrading your NT4 PDC to Windows 2003 which will make
that PDC an Active Directory DC. By doing this you keep everything the same,
users, groups, computer accounts etc. will all still be there.

Well, they want to change the domain name altogether. I don't have
another copy of 2003 to install on the PDC nor do I think it has enough
power to take the upgrade.

Just to update my migration from NT 4.0 domain to a 2003 domain.

I used the tool from MS to do this with some success. I guess it would
be great for large installation, but in my situation with only 25 users,
it wasn't so good.

I had about 20 PC's that randomly had their firewall on therefore the
computer migration didn't work out so I spent most of the time forcing
these PC's to join the domain and copying the profiles over. I think
the password migration for users is hokey. I had to resort to passwords
being the same as usernames. Well, I didn't realize that some usernames
created with Caps also set passwords the same, so I spent about 30 mins
resetting peoples passwords to lowercase for less confusion.
