Problem wth Roaming Profiles, Permissions, and Start menu... |
|
|
Greetings.
I have lately been named "computer chair" at a fraternity at a large
university. Over the past few days i have been upgrading the houses small
network, going from 2 computers running Win2k to 2 computers running XP and a
Windows 2003 Server as a domain controller. One of the reasons for the server
was to allow roaming profiles. Before when each user logged on, their profile
would be different on each computer, and there were all sorts of printing
troubles. Being my first time attempting to setup something like this, there
have been a few bumps along the way. Now, almost everything has been sorted
out except for one small problem.
When I setup all the accounts in the active directory, I had to copy
everyones profile from Windows 2000 into the new system. After many
unsuccessful attempts eventually I found a system that worked, and it goes as
follows:
1) Setup the "perfect" profile under the administrator account on one of the
workstations, then copied that profile over the default profile using the
system properties utility.
2) Make each user a member of Administrators and Domain admins.
3) Log each user into the workstation once.
4) Copy each profile over to the server where they'll be stored using the
utility in system properties.
5) Copy all the data from their old profiles into the new profile on the
server, without replacing anything, using windows explorer (copy + paste). I
did not copy the ntuser.dat or any desktop.ini's.
6) Delete the local profiles from the workstation.
7) set everyones profile paths to \\server\profiles\username.
8) lastly, login each user once.
That worked great, the profiles roam, and everything works properly, except
for one thing. As soon as I demote someone back down to a mere user, their
start menu fails to show. If I look in their profile directory, their list of
shortcuts are still there, but they don't show when they login.
Can anyone help me fix this problem? |

At this current moment maybe you have to assign each user the proper
permission to that user's roaming profile folder on the server.
