Domain Level and Downlevel Domains |
|
|
I am currently in the process of doing a Win2k3 upgrade with domain
consoladation. I have already started with a new forest and I have upgraded
the NT domains into the forest domain. I have more NT domains to uprade into
the forest. I do have some domains that I will be doing a migration to one
of the upgraded child domains. I am running the forest and all domains in
"Mixed Mode". I have the opertunity to migrate some domains before I finish
the upgrades of others. To do this I need to have the domain in "Native
Mode". If I raise the domain level to "Native" will I have any issues with
upgraded the other domains?
The reason I brought this up was I was on a Microsoft support call regarding
a DNS issue and the tech wanted more info. I explained what I was doing and
he mentioned that I should not raise the domain level until all the NT
Domains had been upgraded.
Thanks,

Native mode will not affect your trusts. It will only affect mixed mode
domains - domains with BDCs in (or 2000 DCs in if we're talking 2003
functional mode).
If you are running NT 5.x DCs only you can move up to native mode without
any worries.

Hi Mike,
Just to make sure that I understand your question correctly. Are you
currently in the situation in which you have a Windows 2003 Forest,
consisting of 1 domain, containing Windows 2003 DC's and nothing else? Is
your plan to eliminate the legacy NT4 domains and move all the resources to
the new and shining W2K3 forest?
If your current W2K3 domain does *NOT* contain any NT4 BDC's you can elevate
the functional level to mixed mode without any problems. As Paul pointed out,
trusts will function. Make sure to pay attention to the fact whether or not
you're going to implement SID Filtering on the trust as this DOES break the
SidHistory functionality you might want to use during the migration.
Hope this helps!
Cheers!

RE: Domain Level and Downlevel Domains |

I belive that the situation is:
He has a 2003 Forest and multiple NT4 domains. He is upgrading the NT4
domains into his 2003 forest one at a time making each one a new child
domain. He also has a few other NT4 domains that he wants to migrate into an
AD domain. To facilitate that migration he needs the target domain to be in
Native mode.
You should be able to switch the target domain to Native mode and still be
able to have other child domains running in Mixed mode. You will have to
leave the forest in Windows 2000 Forest Functional Level and can not raise it
to Windows 2003 Forest Functional Level until all DCs in every domain are
running on Windows Server 2003. The only thing that would hold you back from
doing this is if you have NT4 BDCs in that target domain that you have not
yet upgraded. You can not switch a domain to native mode until all DCs in
that domain are running Windows 2000/2003.
