No Forest...Need Help... |
|
|
We are trying to add an xserve on our network and need it to pull active directory accounts from the Win DC, here's an article on how to do it but the method to do this requires a domain and forest name (yes I realize the below is a university how to for students/departments, but it still serves the purpose in mind):
http://www.infodiv.unimelb.edu.au/lansg/osx/os-x3-ad.html
Our domain was setup just as "domain.local" and it's the only domain thus no forest. Every time I try the process to bind the xserve I get the error: "An invalid domain and forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest"
I've tried:
forest = domain
forest = domain.local
forest = dc.domain.local
with domain always being:
domain = domain.local
Nothing works? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Well a single domain is actually a forest. So your domain is domain.local and
your forest is domain.local. From the docs it looks like the forest setting
should be "domain".
I am wondering if the software doesn't like the .local tld on the domain.

I don't want to try this, but want to satisfy our Linux/Mac guys curiosity
on this, what about creating a sub domain or specifying a higher level
forest...Is this even possible? And wouldn't that cause problems in this
otherwise functional domain?

Try using the NetBIOS name of the domain for the domain input and put the
FQDN for the forest. I know it said to use the full dns name for both, but
it's worth a shot.

You could try that but it might be simpler to create a new domain/forest with a
standard tld and see if it works.

I'm wondering, if this turns out to be the case, that the .local tld is the
problem, why does MS allow that in creating the domain in the first place?
on the flip side, what is the purpose to limiting the tld to .com, .org etc?
Eh, just complaining I guess :-)

I don't think it is an MS problem... I am saying that maybe the issue is with
the software you are working with. I have made several domains in the past with
local as a tld and have been pretty successful with it.

it's an apple xserve running Apple OS X Server 10.3.6
The tld thing does make the most sense though and I wouldn't doubt Apple is
being anal about tld's having to be something that exist on the net only.
But, unfortunately for our mac users I'm not about to rename or rebuild the
domain so they can avoid entering authentication information every time they
hit the file server :-)

I would recommend spinning up a test forest and trying it, if it does work,
submit a bug to Apple.

Actually I just found an article on Microsoft's site that pointed to a
script that needed to be run on the xserve to get it to lookup tld's in
rendezvous AND DNS (it was only looking at rendezvous by default. It's a
script located on Apples site, but only Microsoft's support search found it,
go figure...
