I am running windows 2003 Web edition, and am trying to lock down some
unused services. I did a port scan on my server and found that the chargen,
daytime, discard and echo ports are open.

The problem is that Simple TCP/IP was not installed, so there was no way to
disable it. I installed Simple TCPIP services and disabled them, but they
are still running.

How can i disable these services?

Thanks
Ben

I assume that you double checked that it no longer shows as being installed
in add and remove programs/Windows components/networking. If for some reason
it still seems to persist you can open services.msc and stop the simple
tcp/ip service and set it to disabled. --- Steve

Uninstall Simple Tcp/Ip services.
If the ports are still shown as listening, then look for
the app that is doing this, as it is not in the OS.
The tools from www.sysinternals.com might prove
very helpful

Thank you very much!
It did indeed prove very helpful.
It was inetd.exe from CYGWIN which was opening
them all up along with telnet which i wanted.

Thanks again,
Ben
