we upgraded our servers in october to 2003 server and exchange
one day i deleted a folder, forgetting it was a shared resource
the entire group subsequently failed because it couldn't bring that share
online (no longer existed)
when it was 2000 it wouldn't allow the folder to be deleted because it was
an online active resource, but in 2003 it didn't stop me from deleting it
though it was online
is this a problem in 2003? or is there a setting to prevent this?

The same message pops up on 2000 and 2003 warning you that you are deleting
a folder that is shared. Nothing prevents you from deleting this folder in
2000 or 2003. Other than this, there are no warnings about being an "online
active resource".

John

really? i did not get that message when i deleted it. it was about 10
minutes later when i realize everyone couldn't work because after deleting
the folder, cluster couldn't bring it online and the whole group failed. but
under 2000 when i tried to delete a share it wouldn't let me delete it
because it said it was in use. i never got a message saying that i was about
to delete a folder that is shared

Yes, really. You received the "In use" message because someone had an open
handle to the folder. This has nothing to do with MSCS...this is standard
Windows OS stuff. You would have received the same error message if someone
had an open handle to the folder that you deleted on Windows 2000.

In both 2000 and 2003, you should receive a message stating that the folder
you are deleting is a shared folder and requests confirmation before
allowing you to delete the folder.

John
