General question about clusters |
|
|
I need a Computer with 1.5 gig of ram and 2Ghz processor.
I currently have 2 PC's that can give me those requirements if combined
together.
Is this possible by Installing windows server 2003 on both computers and
clustering them?
Thanks in Advance,
Darshan |

Hi Darshan,
It needs to be Windows Server 2003 (Enterprise Edition), but the following
articles should provide the answer to your questions.
309395 The Microsoft support policy for server clusters, the Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309395
814607 Microsoft support for server clusters with 3rd party system
components

Hope this helps,

Re: General question about clusters |

I read through some of the pages and they dont seem to help me as much.
I am not an MSCE. I haven't even taken any networking classes.
I just need to know if what I want can be done.
I already have Windows server 2003 Enterprise Edition (not installed on
either computer).
Only reason I ask, is because someone told me that I can cluster the 2
computers and run Windows as 1 Virtual Machine, which combines the processing
power of both PC's.

You need Enterprise Edition of Windows Server 2003 for both machines. You
also need some kind of external storage. If you have all of this, you can
think about clustering.
A good way to learn about clustering is to read some of the white papers
available. You can also use VMWare or Virtual Server 2005 to build a Virtual
Cluster for testing.
Cheers,

I think everyone is missing your question, unless I am also misunderstanding
it.
Are you asking if you can cluster two servers (1GHz CPUs) to provide a
virtual server that will meet the requirements of your application (2 GHz
CPU)?
The answer is no. The problems with a server cluster is that the application
runs on a single node (one computer of the cluster) and does not combine the
power/resources of the two computers.
I hope that helps. |
