Greetings,

I am setting up a private test LAN, but I am not an IT pro and I'm struggling with DNS for IPv4. I have a 3-nic domain controller with 2008 server on it.

Two nics are for my private test LAN, 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x. The third nic is my public gateway, but this is currently disabled so I think we can assume it is out of the picture.

I have a router with a route set up for 192.168.1.0 -> 192.168.2.1 and vice-versa for 2.0 -> 1.1. I am able to ping across the subnets. I am also assigning client addresses with DHCP. I have netmon to do sniffs.

However, my DNS is segregated. I can nslookup & ping by name to any machine within the subnet, but I cannot resolve names on the other subnet.

Several questions:

What should my DNS be set to on each adapter?
Are there logical DNS records associated with each adapter, or is there one logical DNS for the whole box?
What troubleshooting steps and/or tools can I use to figure out why a name is 'not found' when it is associated with the opposite subnet?

Any help is much appreciated!
