Here goes,

At work here we have Windows NT domain controllers and one Windows 2003 domain controller at the interim functional level. Now, we have a total of 5 NT servers still on the network and 3 of them seeing action right now as two are file servers and one is our smtp gateway and symantec client manager. I have some questions regarding how to bring down the NT domain controllers safely and the reprocussions of doing so. The guy previously in my position upgraded to the 2003 domain controller and left the NT domain controllers on and now im trying to get rid of them. My questions:

1. If i down the two NT domain controllers can they still exist on the network? What about Windows 98 machines and windows 2000/2000 server? How will demoting the NT's affect my network, because we still have a couple of machines on NT server/98/2000/2000 server.

2. Once im able to demote these NT domain controllers, can I stay at the interim level? The reason I ask is from what ive been reading, once you go past the interim level you can no longer promote an NT server as a domain controller, correct?

I use promote/demote for NT, but i know there is no promote and demote, i don't know what they call that for NT when bringing down an NT server Smile
