hard drive space |
|
|
hello
i have a 2003 sbs, works fine, it's the only server in my domain (DC,DNS, DHCP,MAILetc)
i want to increase the size of drive C, system partiton, i'm running out of space soon
i have raid 5 and C is dynamic.
i cannot extend...
what should i do?
shoul;d i clone the C to a temporary hdd, delete the logical drive C from RAID, create one biiger and put the image cloned back?
i preffer to use this clone procedure while i'm NOT in windows...
what software should i use? what permit me to clone from "dos" dynamic raid 5 volume and restore it on a bigger partition?
thanks in advance! |

First you should to a full system backup.
Or if you have another machine with lots of hard drive space do a ghost image of your server via Ghostcast over your network.
Shutdown the server and putll out the hard drives
Install the bigger hard drives and configure the RAID controller
Ghostcast your Image back ont your system.
Word of advise, never create one huge drive and install your SBS onto it, also follow the best practice methods that Microsoft sets forth. Idealy you should be doing the following:
6 or 7 drive RAID system:
drive 1 and 2 Mirror install SBS 2003 on it. (DNS, DHCP, Cert)
drive 3, 4, 5, 6 RAID 5, 7 spare and install Exchange, and anything else like SQL server. You should partition the drive if you plan on installing user profiles etc.

thank you for your answer
you ruined my hopes... 6 or 7 hdd? wow, do you think i can get from the management the money?
so, if i use the classic ghost in offline windows mode (the server is not running any services or processes) i can rely on that image?
ghostcast? neved used it... it works live from windows, yes?
if i can't get a ghostcast classic DOS ghost is good? (i remember ghost can't clone disk/partitions from servers)
i'm worring the cloned image put it back creates me troubles... no boot, bsod, can't find etc
from the SID point of view can be problems? (the hardware will not change)
what it's your advice if i have a 3 x 73GB hdd in raid 5? what size should be the C drive? and the rest? how many partitions/volumes?
Do i really nedd a mirror?
i have another role for my server: WSUS... for this should i create a separate partition?
TIA. |

You should have partitioned your drive at least.
As for ghost you need the full installation of 8.0 or better, it installs under windows and includes GhostCast Server. You want to install your Ghost on another box that has room for your server's image on the network.
You make a ghost image disk (or disks) and during the build of the disk you tell it you want to load the NIC driver and assign an IP address to the machine you want to ghost. (that IP must be an empty IP on your network).
Then you start GhostCast Server and set it up to image.
Restart your Server and boot from the disks you created, you should be able to connect to the GhostCast server either by name or IP address, then it will start to image.
Put the new drives in and reverse the process on your GhostCast Server.
Your only other option is to backup your server, like I said before, and on a weekend or whenever no one is around rebuild from scratch again making sure the system is on at least a 20GB parition, while exchange can support up to 75G these days so you have to be the best judge of the rest of the space.
Maybe it's time to get more hard drives?
Shop around, even use ebay to save on the cost.
