Upgrading Windows 2000 Domain to Windows 2003 |
|

Is it better to upgrade domain controllers or is it better to add windows
2003 DCs and move the roles over and demote the win2k dcs. If it is ok to
upgrade existing DCs which domains do you start with if you have one root
domains and 2 child domains |

Note that Exchange 2000 is installed into 2 of the 3 child domains.
This is the logical setup. The root domain is root.com and the 2 child
domains are domain1.root.com and domain2.root.com and domain3.root.com.
Domain1 is the old domain where we ar migrating all the users to domain 2 and
domains 3 is a domain of another company we own. Exchange 2000 is installed
in domain 2 and domain 3

RE: Upgrading Windows 2000 Domain to Windows 2003 |

Hello,
Good to hear from you.
There are two ways to upgrade from win2k domain to win2k3 domain. One way
is to make an "in place" upgrade, which upgrades DC directly. The other way
is to make a "not in place" upgrade, which uses a new win2k3 DC. It is hard
to say which is better. It depends on your need and the real environment.
Comparatively speaking, it is easier to make an "in place" upgrade.
Regarding your scenario, it is recommended to upgrade with the root domain.
However, it also will do if you upgrade with the child domain. Since
Exchange 2000 is included in your domain, and it cannot be installed on
win2k3, I would like to suggest that you post the question in the
microsoft.public.exchange.setup newsgroup since they are the experts in
Exchange and will provide the most accurate information on this issue.
Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to get
in touch!
Best regards,

I am not worried about exchange on windows 2003 since exchange in not on a
DC. My question was to verify if I can upgrade all the domains in the forest
to windows 2003 Active Directory if exchange is installed in 2 domains but
not on the domain controllers. Can you also go over detailed steps I need to
take?

Hello,
Regarding your scenario, your main concern is Exchange. If you want more
information regarding Exchange, please post the question in the
microsoft.public.exchange.setup newsgroup since they are the experts in
Exchange and will provide the most accurate information on this issue.
As for the upgrade, it is easy to upgrade from win2k domain to win2k3
domain. Please follow the steps below to achieve your goal.
Upgrading to win2k3 domain
===================
1. Backup your win2k DC before you take any action.
2. Run "adprep" to extend the schema.
After that procedure, the domain will contain the additional objects,
attributes and permissions necessary to support the Windows Server 2003
Active Directory environment. Then you can add win2k3 DCs into the domain.
Refer to the following articles for more information.
Please pay more attention in the part "Overview: Upgrading Windows 2000
domain controllers to Windows Server 2003", which contains the information
about "adprep":
325379 How to Upgrade Windows 2000 Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2003

ol/windowsserver2003/proddocs/deployguide/dssbf_upwn_overview.asp
Since "adprep" should run in DC containing certain roles, you may find the
following article helpful to view FSMO roles of a DC.
255690 HOW TO: View and Transfer FSMO Roles in the Graphical User Interface
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=255690
3. Decide whether to directly upgrade a win2k DC depending on the hardware.
3.1 If the hardware supports win2k3, upgrade the win2k DC to win2k3 DC by
using Winnt32.exe.
3.2 If the hardware doesn't support win2k3, promote a win2k3 member server
to DC by dcpromo.
4. Transfer GC from 2k to 2k3. (recommended)
5. Transfer FSMO from 2k to 2k3. (recommended)
Using Ntdsutil.exe to seize or transfer FSMO roles to a domain controller

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to get
