My domain controller went mad, my active directory was corrupt and unfixable, so i had to rebuild the server and to remake the domain and active directory. note that i have a backup domain controller which is my dns server. now when i start making the domain, i enter the same domain name i used to use before, and it gives me "The name "domain" is already in use on this netowrk. Type a name that is not in use." well i understand that, but i do not want to make a new domain name, like domain2 and rebuild everything.

I was hoping that since my active directory is fully functoinal on my backup server, that i can somehow export and import, i tried everything online using all the export and import commands, nothing works. can anybody plz assist me here? any info would be helpful, i\ve spent two days only trying to solve this issue and read hundreds of forum replies about close topics.

All i want is to be able to use the advantage of me having the backup server and its working active directory with everytihng i need to rebuild my primary domain. is there such a thing?s step by step help would be more than helpful.

thank you very very much.

Your going about this the wrong way. First you should be promoting your secondary AD to primary since it has all the records from the old primary AD replicated before it crashed.

If you still want to make the new box the primary you can but you need to join it to the new primary first as a secondary and then replicate everything before promoting it to primary and demoting the primary back to secondary.

The only thing you have to careful of is if you are running Exchange on your secondard box, which you should never do (run Exchange on a DC unless you are using SBS). Then once you are left with not choice if you promote the secondary to a primary to swing it back to a secondary again.
