New AD on UNIX DNS server |
|
|
I recently ran dcpromo to promote a 2003 server and during the wizard, I opted to manually correct the DNS configuration because it was failing the DNS test. SO, I looked at the netlogon.dns and shows - Dept.shool.edu. 600 IN A 169.254.179.109 - on the first line. I’m not sure about this but shouldn't it show the server's IP address e.g. biology on 192.168.34.58?
I mentioned it to our UNIX admin and they will look into it. Not really sure but, what do they need to do on their side?
I need to promote another 2003 srv as another DC for replication purposes. But, I can't until the first one is resolved.
Thanks for the help. |

Nice nick btw,
I can't stress this more enough. Windows 2003 Server DNS server must work 110% before promoting it to AD. It sounds to me that you are a Unix buff that doesn't know enough about Windows. I suggest that you buy a good Windows book or hire a Windows IT guy to do your work.
All the settings you need for DNS are under Start -> Programs -> Administrator Tools -> DNS, if you don't have Administrator Tools right click your start button and select properties then click on "classic mode" the click Apply, and Okay.
In DNS, right click your server and select properties. In a nut shell you must install forwarders into your DNS server for it work at all. This are DNS servers that either your ISP will assign or you can use 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, your IT Manager may have allow DNS from your Windows 2003 Server to pass through the corporate network and out to the internet.
Also you must make sure the Windows 2003 Server DNS IP address is pointing to itself and that there is not other external IP address in the list under the NIC information. There MUST also be on a static IP address too.
Think of DNS server as the backbone to your networks life, without working 110% your screwed.
There are other things you should be enabling in the DNS server but I won't get into those since I would have teach you the ins and outs of Windows 2003 Server. I suggest you get that book or hire someone who knows what they are doing!
