So the computer that was my Windows 2003 Domain Controller fragged its HDD.
Of course, I have only one, and I have no backup. Fortunately, I am not in
a critical environment, (my situation is a test environment) so I can
rebuild the DC with a new name, and deal
with the fallout. I was hoping to minimize the effects by being able to
keep the user profiles from the existing domain users (all two of them!) Is
there any way to do this, or will I need to copy files between old domain
profiles and new domain profiles manually?

Yes, you can do this.

1. Sit down with each user as they logon to the "new" domain. This creates
a new profile. Now, have them logoff. Logon to the computer as the local
administrator. Next, you'll need to copy the old user profile onto the new
profile. To do this, right-click "My Computer" and select Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab, then click Settings under User Profiles.
3. In the Profiles stored on this computer list, click the old profile you
want to copy.
4. Click "Copy To".
5. In the "Copy To" dialog box, Click Browse, and then navigate to the new
user profile folder that you want to copy the profile to. Click OK.
6. Under Permitted to use, click Change. Type the name of the user that will
be permitted to use this profile, and then click OK.
7. In the Copy To dialog box, click OK. If you receive a "Confirm Copy"
message, click Yes.
8. Click OK twice.

Note: Instead of doing all the above steps, you could edit the registry.
Specifically, edit the profileImagePath value for specific profiles under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

No, you should not just edit the registry.
The step-by-step operation described also changes SIDs in DACLs on keys
in the user registry hive automatically, so for best results, use only
the described procedure.
