I Have a Dell Power Edge 700 with RAID 5. Dell being the "wonderful" people
they are, gave me only 8 gigabytes on the OS drive, "C". Tried using
partition magic; would not work with RAID. With all the Microsoft updates,
I'm down to 500 megs spare room on "C" drive. Whereas the "D" drive has 250
gigabytes free. Is there any way to change the partitions or the RAID without
having the reinstall the Server?

Not without potentially breaking everything.

Have you moved everything possible to the D: partition?
Print Spooler, Pagefile, Users Share, Company Shared Folders?

Where are the exchange databases and log files being stored? these can
easily be moved

Check on the Size for Shadow Copy

Check Tempory internet files size, by default this is 10% of the partition
size

Check the Recycle Bin Size this also reserves 10% of the partition Size

Search for memory.dmp in your Windows folders - this will be the same size
as the RAM in your system and can be deleted, it is created when the system
hits a STOP error and really only readable by Microsoft using the Debug
tools

Search for any files beginning with ~ or ending with .TMP these are
generally removable.

Run TREESIZE (Google for it) and see what is occupying the majority of the
space

Although 8GB is not ideal it should be manageable

You may need to uninstall and re-install some of the programs to move them
to D:, thinking Powerchute, Veritas Backup Exec, you know 3rd party software
that is probably installed in the C:\program files location.

I would always flatten and re-install a system prepared by someone else
unless it was installed according to my guidlines as far as partitions etc.

TT

Why do so many people insist on using what Dell gives them in the first
place? I'm not defending Dell, just asking. Personally, on every Dell server
with SBS that I install, I blow away all the partitions and start from
scratch anyway.

Because we shouldn't have to. That's three hours setup that is supposed
to be done nicely by Dell...that's why we buy from them.

We shouldn't have to fix us...we should fix Dell.

I think we are in violent agreement here.
I just installed a Dell Server yesterday and with everything updated, it's
6GB
and that's when I moved Mail and All Data off to other drives
(It wasn't Pre installed)

I can't believe the 8GB is the setup on Dell servers now.

I wonder if there's a effective way to give them feedback?

The most effective way would be for every person who buys a Dell preinstall
to call Dell support and ask how to increase the size of the C partition and
send a followup email to Michael Dell. Unfortunately that is not likely to
happen and their customers will suffer as a result. This is not limited to
Dell as HP/Compaq have the same issue.

Dell told me that is what Microsoft tells it's OEM's to use. To back that
up, I was at a TechEd a couple of years ago and went to a SBS 2003
presentation and the Microsoft guys doing the presenting of SBS, talked
about that size partition when purchased from an OEM. I spoke up and they
said they would take that into consideration but I think I was too
late...someone at MS already agreed on that size from my take on it.
I've purchased an HP Proliant server with SBS OEM and it came with an 8GB
partition too.
We probably need to complain to MS and perhaps they can change what they
tell OEM's.

any Dell's I've spec'd recently have offered a choice of 8 or 20GB(or
similar) OS partition.

Yes, it's unfortunate that many people believe their ability to spec a
workstation makes it possible for them to spec a server.
