Help with Inbound and Outbound Exchange |
|
|
Hello,
I have beeing trying to set this up with no luck the last few days. Here is
what is happening. I have run the CEICW and set up exchange for SMTP with
routing using DNS.
All of my workstations can use their exchange accounts to email within the
local domain to other users, however no mail reaches outside internet
addresses.
I have a web hosting company hosting my website and email and they have
cooperatively changed the MX records to point to my static ip address of the
sbs2003 server. At my router, I have forwarded ports 25, 443, and 3389 to the
local server IP address.
I cannot recieve inbound email, nor can I send. It seems as if everything
is set up correctly, but still no dice. Is there anything I need to do with
my web host? do they need to create a subdomain mail.mydomain.com? Or is what
I had them do with the MX record sufficient? Do I need to have my ISP create
the same MX record or anything for that matter? Thanks for all of your help! |

Ok, I cannot get a telnet conenction to another mail server outside of the
network, however that shouldnt make a difference if my ISP indeed blocks
port
25 right? I should be able to get an outbound connection, and even though
I
am forwarding port 25 from the router to the server internally...I believe
that the isp is blocking 25. Will that cause me to not be able to send
outgoing mail from exchange? I know that is the reason why I cannot
receive
mail inbound...but also, are my setting on my webhost dns correct?
Thank you.

You can try connecting to Exchange from outside using telnet. Here are a
few details:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=153119
Enable SMTP logging (if it isn't already):
Go into Server Management, Advanced, First Organization [later changes
to your domain name] (Exchange), Servers, [ServerName], Protocols,
SMTP, Default SMTP Virtual Server and open Properties.
On the first tab, enable logging and leave it at the default format.
Don't bother with the Advanced tab yet, the defaults are OK for most
purposes. Just have a look and when you need to go deeper, you'll have a
vague memory of what you can do.
As you can see, the log files live (oddly) in Windows\system32\LogFiles
among many others. The SMTPSVC1 log shows you the details of SMTP
handshakes with other servers, incoming and outgoing, and includes
details of why they fail when they do.
You don't say how you connect to the Internet. If it is through a
DSL firewall/router, it may be possible to enable logging on all
port 25 traffic in and out. This is usually a great help in working
out what is going on. |

No, unless you say something doesn't work.
If you want your dns records checked out, post your domain name.

Ok, I cannot get a telnet conenction to another mail server outside of
the
network, however that shouldnt make a difference if my ISP indeed
blocks
port
25 right? I should be able to get an outbound connection, and even
though
I
am forwarding port 25 from the router to the server internally...I
believe
that the isp is blocking 25. Will that cause me to not be able to send
outgoing mail from exchange? I know that is the reason why I cannot
receive
mail inbound...but also, are my setting on my webhost dns correct?
Thank you.

Hi Justin,
First, check to see that port 25 is open.
From a command prompt on the sbs server, run: "telnet
maila.microsoft.com
25" (without the quotes) and see if you can make a connection. You
don't
have to use that mail server, any known good will suffice.

Hello,
I have beeing trying to set this up with no luck the last few
days.
Here
is
what is happening. I have run the CEICW and set up exchange for
SMTP
with
routing using DNS.
All of my workstations can use their exchange accounts to email
within
the
local domain to other users, however no mail reaches outside
internet
addresses.
I have a web hosting company hosting my website and email and
they
have
cooperatively changed the MX records to point to my static ip
address
of
the
sbs2003 server. At my router, I have forwarded ports 25, 443, and
3389
to
the
local server IP address.
I cannot recieve inbound email, nor can I send. It seems as if
everything
is set up correctly, but still no dice. Is there anything I need
to
do
with
my web host? do they need to create a subdomain
mail.mydomain.com?
Or
is
what
I had them do with the MX record sufficient? Do I need to have
my
ISP
create
the same MX record or anything for that matter? Thanks for all of
your
help!
