How do I create a seperate network. |
|
|
I administrate a real estate office which users work under the head agent.
These users bring in their own laptops and need to print and email, but I
woul like to seperate them from the SBS network. I could put them on a
different subnet but then they couldnt print. I need them to print, have
internet access but not use server for anything but email (OWA). My reason
for doing this is because these users refuse to use XP Pro on their laptops.
Is my way of doing this to use a Level 3 switch that will allow 2 seperate
networks? I need to seperate them because some of these users are getting
viruses and spreading on the network. Server and 3 workstations are using
Trend CSM 2.0. |

Hi Chris,
Why won't they upgrade to XP? Seems a little strange.
What version of SBS 2003 are you running?

I'd set up a wireless access point outside of your SBS domain - in other
words, give them Internet access no different than what they'd have at
Starbucks. Let them get their mail with OWA just as they would from
Starbucks. Personally, I'd set this up with WPA for wireless security, but
if all they're doing is OWA it doesn't really matter from the standpoint of
protecting your network.
3com and probably others make wireless/wired print servers than can connect
to your SBS LAN over Ethernet, and to the wireless network, without
providing any kind of a bridge between the two. So when you print, you'll
be using a wired connection as you do now, but the print server will also
accept wireless connections from the "guests."
I force my users to choose between Windows XP SP2 or no remote access, but I
understand that's not an option for everyone. The thing is, people who
resist that upgrade will resist or ignore other security best practices.
I'd focus less about getting them up to current standards (which is a losing
battle IMO), and more about defending your network against whatever they're
carrying around on those laptops.

You could always make a policy of not allowing connection to the |
network if they won't upgrade or take care of their virus protection.
In any case, the only way you are going to do this really is to put
the machines which are the issue in another subnet and put a cheap
print server on there.
