Domain Controller Load Testing [URGENT] |
|
|
Hi All
I am looking for some application or script that can test a domain
controller in tersm of the users it can support. We are looking at various
hardware options and want to be able to simulate multiple user logins without
someone sitting and keying in the login information. Any guidance in this
direction would be deeply appreciated.
Thx

Thanks Paul for some useful input.
I've not yet tried out the ADSIZER tool, is it easy to configure and use?
Also, I've had a look through KB308356. I am a little confused as to the
recommended usage of the /3GB switch. Are Microsoft recommending we use /3GB
if we have a DC running Windows Server 2003 with more than 1GB physical
memory (my DC's have 2GB) ? |

Hello Rome
As is the case with most of the organizations, we are strapped for $$$ and
hence any freebies will be deeply appreciated.
Thx

Hi Paul
Thank you very much for your links. Let me play with them to see how it
goes. But I am still wondering if there is a way to simulate multi-user
login against a domain controller. Once again thanks a lot.
Thx

That's correct. The phycial addressable RAM is 4 gigs based on the i386
32bit Intel architecture. If there is more than 1 gig of RAM, the kernel
process will attempt to use all of the 2 gigs of addressible ram to itself
leaving the remainder 2 gigs to the user process (applications and such).
The /3GB switch tells the kernel process to only use 1 gig of RAM as to
allow 3 gigs for the user process. Read the section on Virtual Address Space
Concepts in this article for a full explanation:
815372 - How to Optimize Memory Usage in Exchange Server 2003:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];815372
But this totally depends on the application being utilized. That article you
mentioned (I like to post the full title and URL for any links I post so
anyone can simply click on it instead of looking it up):
Memory usage by the Lsass.exe process on domain controllers that are running
Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308356,
clearly states that, unless you are using it for Exchange or SQL. If for a
DC, I don;t see a problem with it.
As for ADSizer, it's rather easy. It's actually a wizard that you go thru
multiple steps telling it number of users, if you have Exchange installed,
how many locations, how many computers, number of daily changes to AD (adds,
deletes, etc), etc, and gives you the absolute minimal recommendations for #
of DCs, GCs, CPU or multiple CPU recommendations, what the physical size of
the AD database will be based on your entries, etc. Try it out on a DC,,
member server or your client machine. It's just a planning tool and will not
harm anything on your machine.
