I have a single Windows 2000 Server for a small domain of five clients, all
either Win2000 or XP Pro. The printers are controlled by the Windows 2000
Server. All my users can connect to the printers through the pre-Active
Directory method, but nothing I do gets the printers published to AD.

On the "Sharing" tab of the printer properties, the box is checked to list
in the directory, but the printer is not visible. If I open AD and go
through the "Add Printer" dialog, I get the following message:

"This printer cannot be published. To publish printers on a Windows 2000
computers, use Printers Folder."

What's going on here? I have no problem publishing shared folders and they
are visible to my users, so AD is functioning. Any help would be appreciated
as I'm having similar printer publishing problems on another larger network
as well. ON that one, AD is needed desperately!

In ADUC, Goto View Menu, select "Computers an objest as Containers" (or
something like that - don't have a machine in front of me to recite the
exact wording). Then double click the OU the server is in, (if the DC,
Domain Controllers OU), and under it you will see the server, click on that,
the printers and other objects show up in the right window pane.

Now, the important thing about published printers is not the fact that you
see them in ADUC, but the fact that your users can search for them in AD and
have the ability to connect to them and install them on their machines thru
AD and not network neighborhood.
