Your workstation DNS IPs addresses MUST be pointing to your DNS server otherwise no one can see them and they can't see the DNS server. Think about the role DNS plays, its the backbone of your network, if it doesn't work 110% and your computer requests the IP for machine1.domain.local yet machine1's DNS doesn't point to the DNS server thus it's not registered with DNS how is the DNS server going to know were to point you??
