POP3 Mail, replies and missing emails |
|
|
Judging by the amount of questions on this out there, this portion of SBS
should be retought.... but here is my problem.
I have a user that can send and receive mail via their mailbox which links
to a POP3 mailbox that is different from the default domain name. I
reconfigured them as suggested in these posts with the default policy box
unchecked.
Their emails display with the appropriate address but when someone replies
to it they do not receive it.
I tetsted it to see if the POP mail server is receiving the mail and it is.
Also I checked to see if the POP3 mail server on SBS is picking them up and
it is.
Where do they go????????? And how do I get them into the users mailbox? They
are not in the administrators account. I looked. |

Do you have a user configured for accepting unrecognised mail? It may
not be the Administrator account. With the original SBS there was a
Badmail folder, but this disappeared with Exchange SP1. If by any
chance this SP hasn't been applied, locate the Badmail folder and
you'll probably find the missing mail.
In the long term, you need to find an alternative method. Even allowing
for the 'built-in' POP3 problems with lists and BCC, the SBS POP3
connector looks distinctly flaky. I understand that there are useful
third-party POP3 downloaders which run on SBS, and I use a separate
server running the [non-Windows] industry standard POP3 downloader,
which is extremely robust. As long as you feed the mail to Exchange by
SMTP it seems completely reliable. |

Hello Jmphilly,
Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.
Also, many thanks for Joe's great input.
To narrow down this issue, please answer and perform the following
questions and steps:
1. Does this issue occur with all users or certain users?
2. Can I assume you are using the POP3 Connector to retrieve incoming
email from ISP POP3 mailbox?
3. As you mentioned, you have unchecked the "Automatically update e-mail
addresses based on recipient policy" option. What's the different SMTP
domain name? Did you add this entry in the Exchange default Recipient
Policy?
To check it, open the Exchange System Manager, go to Recipients ->
Recipient Policies, right-click Default Policy and select Properties, click
E-Mail Addresses (Policy) tab.
4. We can configure the Exchange server to receive e-mails from multiple
domains. For example, a user A can receive e-mails from both
usera@client.com and usera@client.net. To do so:
a. Start Exchange Systems Manager.
b. Click to expand the Recipients container and then click Recipient
Policies.
c. Open the properties of Default Policy that is displayed in the right
pane.
d. Click the E-Mail Addresses tab, click New.
e. Select SMTP Address, click OK.
f. Type any additional SMTP addresses that you want the Exchange-based
computer to host, for example, @client.net and click OK.
g. Select to check the new SMTP address. Make sure that @client.com is the
primary address (When you send e-mail to Internet recipients, the "From"
address which the Internet recipients will see is what you set as "Primary
Address"). Click OK.
h. In Exchange System Manager, expand Recipients -> Recipient Update
Services, and then right-click any Service listed in the right pane to
choose "Update Now".
NOTE: The user account who has been unchecked the option "Automatically
update e-mail address based on recipient policy" will not receive the new
added Recipient Policy. You should add the e-mail address for those users
manually.
i. Run services.msc to bring up the Services Management console, locate
"Microsoft Exchange System Attendant" and then click Restart.
NOTE: This step is recommended since recipient policy will be updated
immediately after the SA service restart. Otherwise, it may take a while to
implement the changes.

How do you set up a mail receiver for bad mail? I have looked everywhere and
through the knowlege base and nothing... I have service pack 1 so it isn't in
the bad mail folder.

I will go through this but I had put the second domain name in the default
profile and no email was received by anyone. So I am hesitant to do that
again. I think I have done every thing you suggested but will post again
after reading. Thanks!

The default recipient of unrecognised mail is set in the POP3 Connector |
configuration. That doesn't necessarily mean that all downloaded mail
