Does anybody know a for sure answer? |
|
|
I have ordered SBS 2003 prem ed and the sku description said it has SP1
included. Apparently the media has SP1 slipstreamed now.
I have the new hardware in my shop and went ahead and used my action pack cd
(which does not have SP1) to set it up for testing the migration, which has
gone well. My distributor has really messed up my order and now the new media
is not going to make it in time for me to scratch and reload it from the new
media per the project deadline.
Will I be able to use the install as is and just install the SP1 separately
and use the key from the new media to activate?
I have done this before without SP1 involved, I just have not used any media
yet the has SP1 included yet and don’t know what the result will be. I am
trying to keep on schedule if possible.

I loaded up a system with my Microsoft Action Pack - MAP media and when the
cust media arrived I just started the activation and forced it to use a
different key. The caveat is both my MAP media and the cust media did not
have SP1 slipstreamed on it?
The difference now is my MAP media does not have SP1 and the new media I
believe will have SP1 on it when it arrives .
Are you saying I will have trouble doing this with the new sp1 media or you
don't believe it could be done in the first place?
Thanks, your help is appreciated |

I would most likely wait for media I am in a bad posistion because I am
scheduled to install this weekend and media is not going to be here in time
so I am trying to solve the problem to keep the schedule intact.
Question is do you know if this will work?

In 18 months time you'll probably be running SBS "R2" anyway, and you'll

I'm getting the impression that no one has tried this. If I were in your
position and had to find a workaround before the weekend, I'd try to find
trial version SBS. At least trial is designed to have a product key added
in the way you're hoping to do it.
My two comments: I suspect you might have a happier experience with the
slipstreamed SP than installing it afterward, although I hear you that that
may not be an option. And, the groups are full of posts from people who
have installed product using the "wrong" media and lived to regret it. To
me, that argues for using trial version or waiting, rather than using the
action pack version. With action pack, you could end up having issues with
future upgrades, adding CALs, or who knows what (that's the point - nobody
knows what the future issues could be).

Yes, it looks like nobody has an truely authoritive answer to this situation.
Im' guessing the only two options at this point are to find the same media to

Does anybody out there have a copy of the new retail version of SBS 2003

I know there are binary differences between OEM, Volume, and Retail Medias.
There are also keys specific to the media type. But I don't know if the MAP
media and retail media has any binary differences.
Keys for correct media make no distiction to the service pack level. So a
key for Retail SP1 media would work fine with preSP1 Retail.
But again, I don't know about the MAP media vs. the Retail media
differences. If it was my client, I'd wait for the proper media unless a
full disclosure and signed waiver was in place.

No, I don't know - sorry. Since installing SP1 is kind of a pain, I would
avoid this - I realize it sets your schedule back, but it's not your fault
the media isn't there, right? I personally would save myself the trouble and
schedule it for later...even if the client is impatient.

When does your distributor say they'll have it for you. About 2 weeks ago I
ordered the VUP from SBS 2000 slipstreamed with SP1 and it arrived in 3 days
so that is definitely out in the channel.

Im' guessing the only two options at this point are to find the same media
to
do a reload or delay.
Does anybody out there have a copy of the new retail version of SBS 2003
prem with SP1, that is willing to make ISO copy for me to download?

I'm getting the impression that no one has tried this. If I were in your
position and had to find a workaround before the weekend, I'd try to find
trial version SBS. At least trial is designed to have a product key
added
in the way you're hoping to do it.
My two comments: I suspect you might have a happier experience with the
slipstreamed SP than installing it afterward, although I hear you that
that
may not be an option. And, the groups are full of posts from people who
have installed product using the "wrong" media and lived to regret it.
To
me, that argues for using trial version or waiting, rather than using the
action pack version. With action pack, you could end up having issues
with
future upgrades, adding CALs, or who knows what (that's the point -
nobody
knows what the future issues could be).

I would most likely wait for media I am in a bad posistion because I am
scheduled to install this weekend and media is not going to be here in
time
so I am trying to solve the problem to keep the schedule intact.
Question is do you know if this will work?

I loaded up a system with my Microsoft Action Pack - MAP media and
when
the
cust media arrived I just started the activation and forced it to
use a
different key. The caveat is both my MAP media and the cust media
did
not
have SP1 slipstreamed on it? [snip]
Remember that, although it's important, a product key does NOT
represent
proof of purchase. Neither does possession of an original set of
CDs/DVDs.
You need to keep the receipt of purchase from your retailer, and if
you've
got a set of CDs/DVD with holograms, with a valid product key sticker
on
them, then who cares what product ID is actually entered on your
server?
In 18 months time you'll probably be running SBS "R2" anyway, and
you'll
need a new licence key for that anyway :-)
IMHO we ought to have better things to do than to give people grief
for
this
kind of stuff.

In a way you are right, I am using my MAP media which I have already
activated the key for personal use, I have not tried to activated twice. Like
I said I have done this before, I just waited to activate it til the customer
media arrived with their unique key. It always came ahead of time and I was
in the clear if there was any problem in the process of activating it. My
current problem is I don't have the media which has SP1 already installed and
I am worried that when I go to use the key that comes which their media, the
activation process is going to complain due to different type of media. If I
had the newest media I would not be worried, I have time right now to redo
the whole setup. As of right now the only media I have is SBS2003 without
SP1. Do you know anybody who could get an ISO image to me of the newest media.
I have already tried my connections and came up dry.

If you can install the server and it activates OK, what is there left "to
work"?

we have addressed this time and time again
This is where you go to the client and you say, " I'm truly sorry...but it
does not appear that the media to do the server install will arrive intime
and we are not going to be able to do the install as scheduled". You will
earn the client's respect for your honesty and desire to do the right thing
by them. If you go ahead and then find that you can't "backtrack" you are
going to have to explain that to the client. that you tried to step around.
This will lose you big points with the client and you may lose their
business period.

I have ordered SBS 2003 prem ed and the sku description said it has
SP1 included. Apparently the media has SP1 slipstreamed now.
I have the new hardware in my shop and went ahead and used my action
pack cd (which does not have SP1) to set it up for testing the
migration, which has gone well. My distributor has really messed up
my order and now the new media is not going to make it in time for me
to scratch and reload it from the new media per the project deadline.
I'd still wait for it, then. Don't use your own media - use the proper
media.
Will I be able to use the install as is and just install the SP1
separately and use the key from the new media to activate?
I have done this before without SP1 involved, I just have not used
any media yet the has SP1 included yet and don't know what the result
will be. I am trying to keep on schedule if possible.

Susan, or anybody the response was short so I am just trying to
clarify.

it to use a different key. The caveat is both my MAP media and the

The difference now is my MAP media does not have SP1 and the new
media I believe will have SP1 on it when it arrives .
Are you saying I will have trouble doing this with the new sp1 media
or you don't believe it could be done in the first place?
Thanks, your help is appreciated
