Role Transfer [WILDPACKET] |

Server A: Domain Naming Operations Master & Schema Master
Server B: RID & PDC Emulator - Running windows2000.
Server C: Infrastructure Operations Master [not a GC]
Dumping ServerB.
I know when we remove a server and it is not coming back then we SEIZE
roles. I am thinking to do a transfer of roles from Server B to a new
Windows 2003 ServerD. Once the transfer is done successfully then I DCPROMO
the ServerB and get it off the network.
Please advise as this will work or not?

Sieze the fsmo roles if the dc currently holding them is unrecoverable. Doing
a transfer while the server is still around is a lot cleaner. Then run
dcpromo to demote |

| You don't need AD to run dhcp so I can't see why it would effect it at all. |

Sorry forgot to mention ServerB is our DHCP server too, serving 350 boxes.
If I demote ServerB, will it have any affect on the DHCP or DHCP will
continue to work fine???
Evantually I'll move DHCP to this new ServerD where these 2 roles will be
going.
Advise Please. |

Thank you Mark for you response.
So transfer is good ... should I be doing this from the command prompt or
from Active Directory User and Computers? |

They would both give you the same effect ... ntdsutil or User and Computers

Just noticed.
When I logon to any DC in my Domain and open Group Policy and in the middle
of the GP window it says ...
GPO higher in list have highest priority blah blah ....
THIS LIST IS OBTAINED FROM SERVER B.DOMAIN.COM
I guess when the roles are transfered from Server B to D this will change to
THIS LIST IS OBTAINED FROM SERVER D.DOMAIN.COM
right???

Your group policy editor will default to the PDC emulator. Can't really
remember why, possibly to stop admins editing the same settings on different
DCs and causing replication to do funny things. |

I was looking in the AD Sites and Services. I ran REPLMON and I noticed all
the servers in the remote sites are syncing witht he DC which I am suppose to
retire.
If I transfer the roles successfully will this be taken care of
automatically or it will cause a disaster???
Advise please. |
