Does SP1 install XP SP2 on all workstations? |
|
|
Hi
We are about to install SP1 on our SBS 2k3 but I am concerned that it may
try to install XP SP2 by default on our workstations.
We have had problems with very slow printing caused by XP SP2.
Is this the case?
Many thanks,
B |

Hi Ben,
Thanks for using SBS newsgroup! Also thanks for Les's input.
For your description, I understand that you want to if the XP SP2 can not
be assigned to client computers when you apply SBS 2003 SP1. If I am off
base, please let me know.
Yes, as Les said, the XP sp2 will be pushed to client computer if you have
run Assign applications to client computers wizard to assign applications
to client computers. After you applied the whole SBS SP1 on the server box,
the XP SP2 installation will be pushed to client computers and you can not
choose un-assign the services packs.
What is your slow printing issue on the XP sp2 computers? Could you tell me

I have done some research regarding to the slow printing issue, and list
some general suggestions to the issue. I hope it useful to you!

Hi Ben,
After you applied SBS 2003 SP1, the XP SP2 will be forcedly assigned to
client computers. So the service packs will be installed if client computer
logon domain next time after applied the SBS SP1. It is not recommended
that you don't apply the XP SP2 since the service pack includes many
critical updates to Windows XP OS
And also you can try to resolve the print issue first and then apply the
SBS 2003 sp1 to free your concern. You can install SP2 in one client
Windows XP computer and then try my suggestions in previous post
And also you can down the XP SP2 in the following link:

Yes, SBS SP1 installs XP SP2 during as part of the /connectcomputer
operation.
You do really want XP SP2, so you should resolve the printing problems
that
exist. They should be resolveable.

Hi
We are about to install SP1 on our SBS 2k3 but I am concerned that it
may
try to install XP SP2 by default on our workstations.
We have had problems with very slow printing caused by XP SP2.
Is this the case?
Many thanks,
B

Hi Ben,
As Jenny says, the xp sp2 service pack will be installed automatically
whether you run /connectcomputer or not.
But the printer problems should be resolveable regardless.
My suspicion is that you've installed the printer from the HP disk - there's
a lot of fluff that probably won't work and isn't needed when you use the HP
disk. My suggestion would be to uninstall the printer(s), and use the native
xp or widows 2k3 drivers.
Where are these printers physically connected? The server, the workstations,
or a network device? If you can give us some details, including who needs
access to the printer(s), from where - I'm sure we can sort it.

Just to confirm, it will only install it when the connect computer is run?
So it wont try and install on current workstations?
If so, as you say, after installing SP1 we have time to resolve the
workstation issues.
We use HP LaserJet 4300 printers with the latest PCL 6 drivers.
I will install SP2 on a machine and test the rest of the suggestions.
Please could you let me know whether the above is correct so that I can
apply SP1 and continue resolving the workstation problems from now on.
Many thanks for all your help.

Hi Ben,
Thanks for using SBS newsgroup! Also thanks for Les's input.
For your description, I understand that you want to if the XP SP2 can not
be assigned to client computers when you apply SBS 2003 SP1. If I am off
base, please let me know.
Yes, as Les said, the XP sp2 will be pushed to client computer if you
have
run Assign applications to client computers wizard to assign applications
to client computers. After you applied the whole SBS SP1 on the server
box,
the XP SP2 installation will be pushed to client computers and you can
not
choose un-assign the services packs.
What is your slow printing issue on the XP sp2 computers? Could you tell
me
your accurate issue? I am happy to work with you to resolve it
I have done some research regarding to the slow printing issue, and list
some general suggestions to the issue. I hope it useful to you!
Suggestion 1:
=====================
This issue may be caused by some old printer drivers, because they are
incompatible with SP2. Therefore, please delete the printer and then
download the latest drivers of your printer, and then install the new
version driver for a test.
Suggestion 2:
=====================
If this issue still exists, please refer to the following method to
uninstall the current printer driver and software (if there is)
completely,
then download and install the latest version from the printer
manufacturer
again.
To clean the printer subsystem completely:
------------------------------------------------
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems
that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry
Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
Using this method will remove all of the printer drivers installed on the
system. You need to install the latest printer driver in order for the
printer to work.
1. Log into the system as an administrator, click Start >> Run, input
regedit and click OK to run regedit.exe.
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print, click
Registry->Export Registry File on the menu, and export the current key to
a
REG file for backup. (Note: You may double click on the REG file in
Windows Explorer to restore the original settings)
3. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Window
s NT x86\Drivers, and then remove both the Version-2 and/or Version-3
keys.
4. Remove ALL SUB KEYS under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers.
(Note:
DO NOT REMOVE THE PRINTERS KEY.)
5. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Window
s NT x86\PrintProcessors, delete any processor that is not the following:
winprint
6. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers,
delete
any provider that is not one of the following:
Internet Print Provider
LanMan Print Services
7. Refer to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors],
delete any monitor that is not one of the following:
BJ Language Monitor
Local Port
PJL Language Monitor
Standard TCP/IP Port
USB Monitor
Windows NT Fax Monitor
AppleTalk Printing Devices
LPR Port
8. Exit the registry editor.
9. Remove all files from the following directories:
