Trend Micro SMB v3.0 Upgrade |
|
|
I tried to upgrade my existing Trend Micro SMC v2.0 on my SBS 2003 Premium
server and workstations with the following results:
Problem 1
After upgrade on server I had a red X next to Licenses. It stated that I was
using 5 of 5 licenses and that immediate attention was needed. Also see
Problem 4.
Problem 2
All four computers that I booted after doing the upgrade on the server
resulted in bad client installs of the antivirus software. The existing v2.0
client was not uninstalled and I ended up with a blend of the two which
actually crashed one of the computers, a laptop. The client on the server
was also affected by this problem. I had to manually uninstall the old
software and then do a web install on each computer.
Problem 3
Logging onto the dashboard and clicking the Security tab on two of the four
computers crashed Internet Explorer.
Problem 4
I started receiving emails every 30 minutes from Trend Micro SMB v3.0
stating that:
"This notification is sent from Trend Micro Security Server: mySERVER More
than 100% of your seat licenses are in use. Refer to the Product License
screen on your Security Server for more information."
Since I use imaging software I was able to restore all of my computers to a
pre upgrade state.

I will admit I did not run the program long last night because of the number
of problems, but I do remember seeing all of the same content filtering
(approved/disapproved domains, spam, language, sex etc.). Sometimes good
email comes in and is quarantined. I then end up adding their
@domain.whatever to the approved list.

I feel most of the issues will go away if I completely remove Trend Micro
from all computers and start clean. I will do this on Saturday so that it
does not impact my business.
As to the license issue, last night as tech support at Trend said it was
a sales/license issue and sales said it was a tech support issue. They
must still be debating it as I have not heard back from them yet.
I also had computers in various legacy groups that needed to be sorted
out.
My only real concern is IE crashing. This is an ActiveX issue I believe.
Perhaps a comparison of the Zones settings between working and non
working computer will help. It could possibly be the Windows firewall
preventing communications.
One other issue for me, and perhaps others, I check the Quarantine files
area at least one a day looking for emails from customers (usually new
customers). I asked Trend to consider adding a tab in the dashboard for
quick access to the Quarantine section.

There must be some issue with your license, Mike. A valid key for 2 is a
valid key for 3.
Not sure about your other issues - the only advice I can give at this
point is to ensure the Trend firewall is *not* enabled anywhere.
My upgrades have been fairly smooth, allthough legacy 'groups' in the
console require a fair bit of work to wrestle into compliance with the
'new way'. Legacy group settings cannot be copied to new groups, and per
computer configurations within the same group are not possible.
I had to get the computers out of the legacy groups, into the new
default groups, apply settings - and go from there.

I did an upgrade install two days ago from v2.0 to v3.0 and it was the
easiest upgrade that I have ever done. I did the upgrade during a LAN
Remote Desktop session so one workstation was upgraded during the server
upgrade and when logging on to the remainder of the workstations they
upgraded themselves without any intervention from me. It is strange that
there would be a red X regarding your license though but I guess they
want you to be sure and see that you have none left to use!!

After a couple more tests, I discovered that unchecking 'Automatically

This may be why the clients did not install correctly on my network.

Each computer takes a license (including the server). It may also be that
the 'exchange' server takes a license, so it's possible for the SBS to use
2. But I'm not sure - the CSM console gives you a count.

Re: Trend Micro SMB v3.0 Upgrade |

That is now largely pushed to the user, in the form of 'End User
Quarantine'. Some will like it, others will not. I have sites in both camps.
The 'not like' camp says they don't want their users to spend their
otherwise productive time checking the spam folder. EUQ can be selectively
turned on and off per user, but if it's turned off - the rejected email
vaporizes. There is no server side quarantine for spam, outside of the users
mailbox.
So a different approach must be taken. IMF can be useful here. But in order
to 'tune' the anti-spam settings, one is going to have to open things up
temporarily - get a good handle on the SCL being applied and where the
cut-off to block spam is workable - and then start to tighten things down.
In the meantime, the EUQ spam folders are quite busy, as are the users that
would otherwise be doing business instead of attending to spam.

The only quarantine in CSM 3 is for viruses and attachment blocking.
If you're looking for anti-spam quarantine, then you need to learn about
EUQ. This is handled *VERY* differently in CSM 3, and I'd encourage
people not to upgrade to CSM 3 until they know how the changes will
impact them, and how they will handle this.

One other issue for me, and perhaps others, I check the Quarantine
files area at least one a day looking for emails from customers (usually
new customers). I asked Trend to consider adding a tab in the dashboard
for quick access to the Quarantine section.

There must be some issue with your license, Mike. A valid key for 2 is
a valid key for 3.
Not sure about your other issues - the only advice I can give at this
point is to ensure the Trend firewall is *not* enabled anywhere.
My upgrades have been fairly smooth, allthough legacy 'groups' in the
console require a fair bit of work to wrestle into compliance with the
'new way'. Legacy group settings cannot be copied to new groups, and
per computer configurations within the same group are not possible.
I had to get the computers out of the legacy groups, into the new
default groups, apply settings - and go from there.

I did an upgrade install two days ago from v2.0 to v3.0 and it was the
easiest upgrade that I have ever done. I did the upgrade during a LAN
Remote Desktop session so one workstation was upgraded during the
server upgrade and when logging on to the remainder of the workstations
they upgraded themselves without any intervention from me. It is
strange that there would be a red X regarding your license though but I
guess they want you to be sure and see that you have none left to use!!

I tried to upgrade my existing Trend Micro SMC v2.0 on my SBS 2003
Premium server and workstations with the following results:
Problem 1
After upgrade on server I had a red X next to Licenses. It stated
that I was using 5 of 5 licenses and that immediate attention was
needed. Also see Problem 4.
Problem 2
All four computers that I booted after doing the upgrade on the
server resulted in bad client installs of the antivirus software. The
existing v2.0 client was not uninstalled and I ended up with a blend
of the two which actually crashed one of the computers, a laptop. The
client on the server was also affected by this problem. I had to
manually uninstall the old software and then do a web install on each
computer.
Problem 3
Logging onto the dashboard and clicking the Security tab on two of
the four computers crashed Internet Explorer.
Problem 4
I started receiving emails every 30 minutes from Trend Micro SMB v3.0
stating that:
"This notification is sent from Trend Micro Security Server: mySERVER
More than 100% of your seat licenses are in use. Refer to the Product
License screen on your Security Server for more information."
Since I use imaging software I was able to restore all of my
computers to a pre upgrade state.

I now have a good installation by doing the following:
1. I remove all clients form all computers including the server.
2. Reset the connection manager in I.E. to use only the proxy server, no
automatic settings.
3. Remove all clients and groups, except the default, from Trends Client
page.
4. Ran the Trend v3.0 upgrade on the SBS server and rebooted.
5. Booted the clients one by one and did a web install.
Every thing works fine except for the red X next to licenses and the email
message that states:
This notification is sent from Trend Micro Security Server: mySERVER More
than 100% of your seat licenses are in use. Refer to the Product License
screen on your Security Server for more information.

If the Server takes two licenses, one for SBS and one for Exchange then they
better throw in a couple more licenses for that price if that is how it's
going to work!! It sounds like that something else could be wrong though
because I would be using six licenses with my setup if that were the case. I
have four users on the server and the Trend license shows just four being
used. I do have a client installed on the server as well.
