Installing SBS 2003 on a Network that already has a Domain c |
|
|
Hi There,
I am trying to setup a new SBS 2003 server as a dedicaded db machine in a
network that already has a domain controller. Is there a way for me to move
it into the existing domain? What do I need to do? Should I start over?
Thanks,
Marcelo |

This is not an option now, so what are my alternatives? What if I install
windows server 2003 instead of SBS, would that help?
Thanks,
M

Just as a segway the existing domain controller is an SBS 2003 box. Sorry
about the omission.
The new SBS2003 box will have to replace the old one, you can't run two
SBS2003 servers in the same domain (apart for a limited time period of
migration purposes).

Yes you mave have member or DC servers in a SBS Domain as long as SBS
continues to maintain the FSMO roles.

So how do I turn this new SBS box into a member server of the existing SBS
domain?
Thanks,

ooops, I missed the fact that the existing server is sbs ;-(.
As others have indicated, only one SBS box per domain. Don't even think of
using the SBS disk set to install only the OS portion, that will bite you.
You need WS 2k3.

Hi msimas,
If you want SBS, then it has to be at the root of the forest. So if you're
not OK with that, then SBS isn't for you.
But you can bring SBS into an existing domain.
a) install the OS, using the first disk (w2k3 server) only - at this point
(don't continue with SBS setup).
b) join this (to be sbs) box to the domain, make it a DC, sieze roles, and
allow AD replication.
c) complete the SBS setup.
I'm not sure if this is a MS approved and/or documented migration scenario,
but it certainly is possible with the swing procedure at
http://www.sbsmigration.com, or a variation thereof.

Purchase Windows 2003 server and reinstall with that. You can't use the SBS
media.

Let me rephrase myself. How to I prevent the new SBS box from trying to
control the FSMO tables and agreeing to be a member of the existing SBS
domain?
Thanks,

The cheap answer is: by installing Windows Server 2003 on it
SBS2003 will not do what you want. You need "vanilla" Windows Server 2003.

Thanks everyone for the help, I will go ahead and try the Windows 2003
vanilla setup. Y'all have a good weekend... ;-)

But with SBS 2003, isn't installing into an existing domain a
supported option? I have a feeling that I may need to do this sooner or
later.

Yes its supported. After you have followed the proper procedure the SBS will
be "boss" with all the FSMO roles.
