Coping & Permissions [WILDPACKET] |
|
|
Got in a new server and now have to move all the USER folders to this new
Server from the old server. Have 600GB of data. What is the best way to move
this amount of data it's a fibre backbone was thinking of XCOPY? ANy better
idea which would require no or least user intervention????
And is there any way where I can retain all the permissions on the users
folders when copied to the new server, I would love this one???
Please advise and Thanks in advance. |

What we have done is break our san up into logical junction points (About
500 gig shares. We are now using a NetApps Filer). We then did a restore
onto the new storage facility from the retiring storage. Once this was
complete we would run a robocopy. The restore took in excess of 24 hours
and we didn't want to shut down or facility. We did this with a
multi-terrabyte san and the outage was then 15 minutes. This was just to
get to the users switched over.

I am hearing good things about ROBOCOPY but never tried it out. Is it
really robust and requires no/less user intervention because XCOPY does
require user input and stops during copying if it find files which
already
exist??
Advise please.

We run in the enterprise for mirroring as well as for moving data in
circumstances just as you request. You should take some time and read up on
it.
