Is it possible to get the backup report that is used in SBS2003
installed and running on Win 2003 Standard? I installed the CompanyWeb
for Win 2003 Standard, but I would like to get the backup report running
on my 2003 standard servers too.

How do you guys (and gals) handle a non-admin accessing the Backup
Report on SBS2003? I don't want to give the office manager access to log
on to the server, but I want them to see the report.

Hello Leythos,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you have following two questions regarding Backup feature:

a. Can we use the Backup feature on Windows Server 2003 as SBS 2K3 Server?

b. How to configure some users to see the Backup Report.

If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

Please see my reply for each of your questions:

1> For question a:

A: No, we cannot read the SBS Backup Wizard Report on the Windows Server
2003. This is because the Backup Wizard is SBS feature, not Windows Server
2003 feature.

1. Windows Server 2003 provides backup functionality through the built-in
utility called NTBackup.exe. NTBackup logs locate at:

The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup
User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data'.

2. To encourage regular backups and minimize the complexity of the features
offered by NTBackup, SBS provides a replacement called Backup Configuration
Wizard (also known as SBS Backup). The Backup logs of SBS Backup Wizard
locate at:

The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.

The Backup Configuration Wizard will enable a customer to choose a pre-set
schedule and pre-set backup options to backup the entire server including
the System State and Exchange database. These options will be moderately
customizable such that users can choose the days of the week for backups to
run, and set a single time for the backups to launch on the days of the
week they have chosen. This wizard will also make it easy to modify server
settings that retain deleted items, such as Exchange deleted item
retention, and shadow copy settings.

2> For question b:

For your best convenience, may I know why you do not want your clients to
access Backup logs, please? Based on my research, there are several
solutions. However, I am not very clear your detail requirements, so please
see my following general suggestions:

1. Share the Backup log folder, and ONLY assign Read Permission for the
specific users.

Please see my general steps:

Since SBS Backup Logs locates at '%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs',

a. Right click the folder, select Properties.

b. On the share tab, and share the folder.

c. Security tab, add the specific users in. Only assign Read Permission.

d. Click Advanced button. Permissions tab.

e. High light the user's account, click Edit.

f. Make sure that the user only has Read Permission.

2. Send Performance Report to the specific users so they can view the
backup results. Please see my steps:

a. Expand Server Management\Standard Management\Monitoring and Reporting.

b. On the right pane, click Set Up Monitoring Reports and Alerts.

c. Run the Monitoring Configuration Wizard.

d. Modify existing settings.

e. Proceed to the page of "E-mail Options", input the specific users' email
address.

f. Finish rest of the wizard.

3. In SharePoint Site, create a library, and upload the Backup Logs. The
advantage is users can access the WSS site to view the Backup results in
LAN or from the Internet (providing they have credential to log in WSS when
they access from the Internet). The disadvantage is you need to upload the
Backup Logs once Backup finishes everytime.

For more detail information, pleas see:

Windows SharePoint Services Administrator's Guide
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/technologies/
sharepoint/wssagabs.mspx

4. Write a script. Everytime when Backup finishes, system can send an alert
to the specific users with the Backup Logs.

The issues include custom coding/programming, scripting,
design/implementation type of issues would best be addressed in the
Developer newsgroups. I have provided the link below to access Developer
newsgroups. By posting here, you may get some pointers from others who may
have had similar experience that they can share with you.

Hope this information helps. If you have any further questions or concerns,

I want them to access the logs, I want them to know if the backups

would rather have a nice report like the one that SBS generates. It
would be great if I didn't have to allow a secretary without any network
skills access to their Domain Controller. While I could share the backup
logs in a read-only mode, even the logs are not simple enough for many
non-technical users to understand. A simple passed/failed/ passed, but
some files were in use, would be perfect.

setup the companyweb with all of the nice features, now I need to make a
Library that points to the backup logs folder.

Hello Leythos,

Thank you for posting back!

I understand that you are running Windows Server 2003, and you plan to
upload the Backup log on SharePoint Service.

This inquiry would best be posted to the <microsoft.public.sharepoint>
Newsgroup. The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will
get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other customers who read
the newsgroups regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from
your interaction with us.

Thank you for your understanding!
