wss onwindows 2003 webedition |
|
|
Hi All
seeking major pros n cons of choosing windows 2003 web edition as web
server for wss
Please help , there is no article which consolidates installation
configuration issues and limitations.
major concerns here are
1) is it necessary to join it in doamin while installing
2) or it can take local accts in domain acct creation mode
3) i understand the Db can be only on mssql and msde is not supported.
4) how can i calculate the estimated db size growth
5) also is there is any limitaion /major feature limitaion if we use wss
onweb edition?
please guide
cheers

Major limitation (last question): if you install WSS on web edition you must
have the WSS database stored in a second server. So you need typically to
run SQL Server 2K on a second server running Win 2K or Win 2003 (Server
versions).
So it's not usually cheaper - unless you already have another server running
SQL Server 2K. Cheapest is normally to use Win 2003 Server edition and do
the default install with the free WMSDE. (Main snag - no sort)

Hey Engelbert and Steve
To summarize
If i say start with ifvolume of users and document sharing is not that high
i can propose following model
1) ONe DC + SQL server + one front wend web server ( wink2k3 web edition)
so we will be able to run search fine
also still i cannot calculate the db size ( since sql server will be used
will be shared one)
I am still not confirmed on if db size is a lmit or not in MSDE

(I too like Steve P confirm use of WMSDE means no full-text-search)

db

also i think if we choose MSDE then full text search wont be available?

Correct -- full text search not available on WMSDE.
In my opinion, the main benefit of web edition is if you want to (or
anticipate wanting to) have multiple load balanced web servers and one or
more back-end SQL servers. This is how we use it and it works well so far.
Of course, this implies using domain accounts rather than local machine
accounts.

WMSDE which is what the default installation of WSS uses is a special
version of MSDE 2.0 for WSS and Windows components (so MS use it elsewhere)
only. It doesn't have limits on DB size unlike the normal MSDE 2.0.
(I too like Steve P confirm use of WMSDE means no full-text-search)

DB size:
lists: usually negligible
document libraries: ca 1.8 times the size of the documents (times the number
of versions !)
DB size limits:
I already said that WMSDE used in a default WSS installation does not have
db size limitations. To be exact it has the same limitations as SQL Server
2K (i.e. big).
There is no reason for you to use standard MSDE 2.0 which does have
limitations in dbsize
