I have a Windows 2003 DC and the hardware needs to be replaced.

I am moving from an HP compaq P3 server to a new HP Compaq Dual Xeon.

The only article that I can find on how to backup one server and restore
onto a new is based around windows 2000 server.

Do I simply backup the original server using NTBackup and backup everything
and restore onto a vanilla W2K3 Server install?

Surely I don't still have to do all the old DC interim mode stuff do I?

help !!

thanks,

jON

Hi Jon,

Beyond NT Backup, we have following things to consider:

1. Add the new server into domain.
2. Promote it to DC
3. Transfer FSMO
4. Demote the old dc.
5. Remove old dc out of domain.

Regarding transfer FSMo, please refer to:

Hope it helps.

The "normal" way to do this is to:

1) set up the new server
2) DCPROMO it as a DC
3) make sure that DNS, DHCP, and any other functions served by the original
DC are installed and set up
4) Move the FSMOs to the new server
5) Take the old server off line (or stop NETLOGON) and see if there are any
problems
6) Once you've verified that it's OK, DCPROMO the DC to a member server
7) Remove the server from the domain

I would urge you to consider keeping the original machine on line as a
second DC (unless the hardware is going bad). You are for a world of hurt
if your single DC goes off line and needs to be re-built......

I'm not sure I made myself clear here ...

The old server is dying ... RAID array hangs on reboot amongst other things.

I want to make the new hardware "replace" the old one so that it has the
same name and everything.

I do not want to add a DC or second server.

What if I were to say that the old machine has gone pop ? Surely there is a
path that I can take to restore but just to different kit?

Forgot to mention that you will need to update all the other servers and
clients to use the new server as their DNS server (unless you can keep the
old IP address...).

The old server is dying Vincent but is currently operational.

I want to replace the old server before it gets any worse.

I will not lose any data because the server is not actually dead yet and the
problems are only on startup at present.

Because all my drive mappings on my workstations are pointing to the
existing server I want to transfer the entire server over to the new
hardware, I want to retain the server name, the SID and all DC services and
transfer these to my new server hardware.

I have a secondary DC in the form of my Exchange server already on the net.

I believe that an NTBACKUP and restore will achieve this.

I just need someone to tell me that it will work or whether I am wrong on
this.

The is the PDC.

Hi Jon,

I do understand NTBackup is needed. However, in addition to that I think
transfer FSMO is needed to be consider.

Regarding transfer FSMO, please refer to:
