SBS 2003 SP1 (bundled) Slow Startup and Shutdown |
|
|
A previous post seem to indicate if SP1 was applied it started to slow down.
My new SBS install media says "SP1" so the SP is bundled and it's been slow
since the very first day, before Exchange SP2, and then no difference after.
It takes about 10 minutes to get the logon prompt and about 10 to shutdown.
So if I have to patch to apply, that's 20 minutes with no server. The
machine is a Dell with 2.8 GHz CPU with 1GB of ram, clean install on 40GB
hard drive, 8GB boot partition and 10GB programs partition.
Thanks for any advice.

Can you stop the services one by one and see which of them take a long time,
then try rebooting once most of the "big" services are shut down and see if
it shuts down faster?
I'm thinking of these kinds of commands:-
net stop msexchangeis /y
net stop iisadmin /y
net stop mssqlserver /y
net stop workstation /y
net stop server /y
and after that try your reboot. |

If it's taking 10 minutes to start up that's a sign your DNS is messed up.
What's your ipconfig /all look like?

Dear Customer,
Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
I understand that after installed SBS 2K3 SP1 on your machine, you are
experiencing slow log in server issue. If I have misunderstood your issue,
please let me know.
Thanks a lot for Jim and Susan's input!
Due to lack of detail information, I need your help to gather following
information for detail research:
1. As Susan said, please make sure the TCP/IP configuration is correct.
On the SBS Server and one client workstation, open a command window, type
"ipconfig /all" (without quotation marks), copy and paste the full content
to the Newsgroup.
2. As Jim said, let's perform a Clean Boot on the SBS Server to see whether
there is any third party interference. To do so:
a. Click Start->Run, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotation marks) and
click OK.
b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click the
"Startup" tab.
c. Click to clear all the check marks from the list box under "Startup".
d. Click the Services tab, check the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box and
then click the "Disable All" button to disable the non-Microsoft services.
e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.
f. After restarting, please check whether this issue still exists.
3. You mentioned "It takes about 10 minutes to get the logon prompt and
about 10 to shutdown", so I need to know which step takes time. For
example, applying group policy, or applying network configuration, etc.
4. On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check whether
there is any error. If yes, double click it, click the Copy button and
paste the full content to the Newsgroup.
5. Did you successfully install SBS SP1? Did you meet any error message
when you installing SP1?
Please take your time to perform the steps above and collect the
information for us to troubleshoot your issue. If anything is unclear,
please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Best regards,
Brandy Nee

Hi Brandy
There are no clients on this LAN. I have only the server and Internet users.
I have checked MSCONFIG and there are only five items. Two are for Symantec
Anti-Virus v9.05.100. The other three are Microsoft as shown below
* DWTRIG.EXE (DR Watson)
* sqlmangr.exe (do I need this?
* Server Management wizard (starts at login)
I had absolutely zero errors except for the one I sent you, show again
below.
Thanks,
-Bob

Hi all,
Here is the IP config all followed by an error I get in the "System"
section
of the event viewer. The DNS events are clean. Note: 10.91.1.3 is for a
new
public website while 10.91.1.2 is the original IP of the machine.

Description:
None of the IP addresses (10.91.1.2 10.91.1.3 169.254.247.46) of this
Domain
Controller map to the configured site 'Default-First-Site-Name'. While
this
may be a temporary situation due to IP address changes, it is generally
recommended that the IP address of the Domain Controller (accessible to
machines in its domain) maps to the Site which it services. If the above
list of IP addresses is stable, consider moving this server to a site (or
create one if it does not already exist) such that the above IP address
maps
to the selected site. This may require the creation of a new subnet object
(whose range includes the above IP address) which maps to the selected
site
object.
