help with chm document |
|
|
I downloaded the new updated .chm document and want to put it in my support
site. The server adm has this type blocked. I tried it in my dev box which
does not have office or anything else except windows sharepoint services and
it would not load properly.
it there a place to get the decompiled help document so that I can upload it
into the SharePoint support site I am creating?
I want to have a basic page with the glossary
a new users page with the basic content
and a administrators page with the more advanced help features.
Sometimes it is not so easy to navigate through the help files built into
sharepoint
thanks

If you only need pieces, have you considered just copying out the content
and creating your own pages? That may be easier than trying to get
decompiled files from MSFT (which seems like a tall order from them). If
you copy out the content you can remove the unneeded stuff and customize it
for your install.

Hi,
It is easy to decompile the help file. HH.exe is the program that displays
help files. If you run this command
hh.exe -decompile c:\some_dir c:\windows\help\wssadmin.chm
it will extract all the files.
One of the files that gets extracted is the toc file which has the table of
contents in it.
I've been experimenting with transforming this file into something that can
be used by the Data View web part to render the navigation and placing the
help files into a document library.

Nobody seems to have picked up on the "loading properly" part of the
question.
If you mean that the entire right (text) section is empty, this has nothing
to do with WSS.
You copy the .chm file to your hard disk; do Windows Explorer; and then
select the file and right-click and you get an option (forgotten the name)
that allows content to be opened for that file.
I suspect that if you then re-add that (doctored) copy of the file to the
WSS site, the next person to open it will see the content. (If not they'll
have to do the same as you did).

Yes Ian, I wanted to take the glossary and put it into the content editor on
a basic page as well. I also want to break out the help file into new users
and site owners on separate pages. thank you so much, Let's share info on
this. J

when I tried that and when put on the site into the webpart got a page cannot
be displayed. I might be doing something wrong there.
