In which CHM did you find the problem? What page is it? (I'd like to
reproduce the problem)

It's hard to find the right person at MS to report these sorts of
problems to, but often you can find a link on the online version of the
file to report problems.

here is something I put together it might help:
************************************************
Checking documents out and in:
The document check-out feature allows a community member to “lock” a
document and prevent it from being edited for a period of time, until the
user checks the document back in. This is especially useful for making a
local copy of a document to work on remotely. You can also check out a
document without making a local copy. To check out a document:
• On the page that displays the library, point to the file name to display a
down arrow.
• Click the down arrow to reveal a menu, and then click “Check Out.” This
marks the document as checked out to you, and prevents it from being edited
by other users.
• Copy the document to your local drive by any copy method you prefer. One
easy way is to open the document for editing, and using “Save As” to save a
local copy.
• another easy method is to open library in the explorer view
and use any copy method you prefer, or drag and drop the doc from the
explorer view window to your hard drive

To check a document back in:
• First, verify that the document in the library remains checked out to you.
Only an administrator can over-ride a check-out, but you will want to check,
just to be sure.
•Click the down arrow to reveal a menu, and then click “Check In.” This
marks the document as available for use by any team member.
•If you’ve edited the document off-line, copy the document back into the
document library, overwriting the old copy.
•another easy method to bring the edited document to the server is to open
library in the explorer view and use any copy method you prefer, or drag and
drop the doc from your hard drive the to explorer view window

Your directions seem perfect for any internal end users, and you're
right ... the MS directions seem flawed in some regard.

I would change your directions to save the document before you check it
back in if you're using the web browser to perform the check-in
operation. That's the cycle: Check out -> Edit -> Save -> Check in.

Where did you get this CHM file? It might help me find the proper web
site or e-mail alias to use to report problems with the documentation.

Isn't it funny how sometimes we skip an important step, it just becomes so
second nature to us. I will add that in. I did a chm. search on MS main
site and from the search got the download.
I was trying to get a decompiled chm so that I could put the glossary in a
content editor on a basic page and wanted to also break out some of the other
sections as faq's or similiar for the support site. Help is not intuitive
to me so I don't expect it to be much help to the new user, except when I
saw the updated chm it was better structured. J
