Is connecting users (via /ConnectComputer) any different than just the
usual method of joining a user to a domain? Have used Windows/AD quite a
bit, but this is my first SBS server.

My normal method of joining a user is to use the File Settings & Transfer
Wizard to get their pre-domain profile migrated to their new domain-joined
profile, but was faintly hoping that something in SBS made FTSW
unnecessary.

There are a number of differences because there are a number of things
different but you should get a dialog box which allows you to "match
profiles".
You will always want to use the wizards with SBS or you will regret it in
the end.

Hello David,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you want to know the differences between using Add User
Wizard, Set up Computer Wizard and manually create users and computers in
ADUC. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

My reply is a bit long, so please take your time to read through it.

=================

The Add User Wizard will do following for you automatically:

- Creates user account. Allow multiple users to be created.

- Enables Exchange e-mail services for the user. Exchange mailboxes are
created if e-mail alias is specified.

- Sends an introductory e-mail to the user.

- Assigns the user to Exchange distribution lists.

- Grants access to network resources such as shared folders, printers, and
fax printers.

- Grants permissions to SharePoint.

- Grants the user VPN/Dial-in access or not via group membership.

- Gives the user remote administration privileges or not via group
membership.

- Deploys software to user computers (launches the Setup Computer wizard).

- Assigns user(s) a logon script \\servername\NETLOGON\SBS_LOGON_SCRIPT.bat.

=================

The first role of the Set Up Computer Wizard is to set up clients in the
new SBS domain. The second role is to support continuous rollout of
clients, and deployment of applications. This wizard facilitates the tasks
necessary to create the Active Directory computer object, and configure the
client by assigning software and specifying local settings. By using a
wizard, these administrative tasks are much simpler and guided. In summary,
the Set Up Computer Wizard facilitates the critical tasks of:

- Initial setup/upgrade of the SBS domain client computers.

- Adding additional clients to the SBS domain.

- Updating or adding client applications.

- Removing clients from the SBS domain.

=================

Furthermore, on SBS 2k3 Server, you should see following OUs which you can
not find in Standard Windows Server system.

YourDomain\MyBusiness\Computers\SBSComputers
YourDomain\MyBusiness\Computers\SBSServers
YourDomain\MyBusiness\Users\SBSUsers

These OUs are specially designed for SBS 2K3 Server. All the new users and
computers object created by SBS wizard will be put into its correspondence
OU. This design is helping you to manage your AD object.

In addition, it is suggested that you use wizards to create SBS AD objects.
For creating user, you could run Add user wizard in the Users node of
Server management. The same is creating Computer object, you could run add
client computer wizard or add server computer wizard in the correspondent
node of server management console. Furthermore, some SBS specific
configurations are applied to these specific OU such as assign application
wizard and centralized control in the Server management predefined
operation interface.

For objects migrated from legacy system or created manually in the AD users
and computer console, it may be put in the normal OU.

So it is recommended to create users, computers by using the SBS Wizards.
Otherwise, you might encounter some problems, even though the problems
should not be serious, but time consuming. I think you would like to enjoy
all the convenience and great features that SBS bring to you.

Hope this information helps. if you have any further questions or concerns,
please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee
