Help Help Help...
I tried to install the SP1 for SBS 2003, and the first update in the list
(Windows 2003 SP1) failed towards the end with an error: "access denied". No
explanations...
Is there a fix I should install BEFORE the SP1 installation??

Thanks

then if you are still having problems, post the problem here or calls to PSS

I did read the article (twice!), and I'm outside of the US...
I tried everything from disconnecting the network cable (so no one will use
the server by mistake), to stopping all services related to backup and
antivirus (both CA).
I use the Administrator account (that was just renamed) so no access
problems there. Also there are no logs anywhere on the server named errorlog
/ eventlog / setuplog from today...

Hi Moshe,

To your another question, we need apply Windows 2003 SP1 service packs
first, then apply other service packs. Please take a look at the following
detail information:

The whole SBS 2003 SP1 package disks including:

A. Windows Server 2003 SP1
B. Windows SharePoint Services SP1
C. Exchange Server 2003 SP1
D. Outlook 2003 SP1 (applies to each client)
E. Windows XP SP2 (applies to each client)
F. Active Sync 3.8 (applies to each client)
G. SBS 2003 SP1
H. SQL Server 2000 SP4 (Premium only)
I. ISA 2004 (Premium only)

We need apply the A-G service packs one by one and the G: SBS 2003 SP1
should be applied in the end. The H-I service packs can be applied as you
need and there is no order of them.

The premium SP1 disk just has more contents: SQL Server 2000 SP4 and ISA
2004 than that in the standard SP1 disk. What is more, I would like to give
you some information about apply SP1.

What is more, you can refer to the following articles to apply SBS 2003 SP1:

Suggestion 1:
======================
Before you begin to apply SP1, I suggest you follow the below white paper
to backup your SBS server first. So that your business and data could be
kept safe no matter how the troubleshooting process goes.

Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/maintain/bkuprstr.mspx

Suggestion 2:
======================
It is recommended you apply SBS sp1 follow installation guide provided by
Microsoft and you will not encounter many issues.

You can refer to the following link to apply SBS SP1:
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?PageContentID=62&tabid=236

In the following website you can find many useful resources related to SBS
SP1:
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?PageContentID=53&tabid=236

The website includes: What is SP1 for SBS 2003 and what you need to know |
Standard install step-by-step | Premium install step-by-step | Things to do
after the upgrade | Errors that can occur after the upgrade

Suggestion 3:
======================
To prepare Windows Small Business Server to deploy Windows XP SP2 to client
computers that are running Windows XP Professional, follow these steps on
your Windows Small Business Server-based computer:

Please refer to the following KB article:
884032 Update is available for the Windows Small Business Server 2003 Client
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884032

Note: installing hotfix 884032 may fail with error about fax service; you
can refer to follow steps to resolve:

Resolution:
================
1. Uninstall Fax Service via SBS Setup using component Selection screen,
set the Action to Uninstall for the Fax Service.
- May require you to Set the correct permissions on the Default Domain
Controller User Right Assignments

- under Group policy - Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Local
Policys / User Rights Assignments

2. Complete the wizard.

3. Rename the following keys and files to *.old:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fax
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Fax
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\fax
C:\Winnt\FaxSetup.log

4. Reboot the server
5. Reinstalled the fax service

Hope above information helps! I am happy to be an assistance of you and
look forward to your reply!

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

Hi Moshe,

To your another question, we need apply Windows 2003 SP1 service packs

A. Windows Server 2003 SP1
B. Windows SharePoint Services SP1
C. Exchange Server 2003 SP1
D. Outlook 2003 SP1 (applies to each client)
E. Windows XP SP2 (applies to each client)
F. Active Sync 3.8 (applies to each client)
G. SBS 2003 SP1
H. SQL Server 2000 SP4 (Premium only)
I. ISA 2004 (Premium only)

We need apply the A-G service packs one by one and the G: SBS 2003 SP1

The premium SP1 disk just has more contents: SQL Server 2000 SP4 and ISA

What is more, you can refer to the following articles to apply SBS 2003 SP1:

Suggestion 1:

Hi Jenny,

Thanks for your reply, I checked that all you mentioned was ok (it was). I
checked the permission on the folder (..\Event Viewer\Security not (..\Event
Viewer\Security\Security since the later had no permission option...) and
found it to be as you wanted. I will try installing the SP1 when logged under
my account which is an administration account too (plus all the other like
schema admin etc.) and will let you know how it went.

Thanks,

M. Bodik

Hi Moshe,

To your another question, we need apply Windows 2003 SP1 service packs
first, then apply other service packs. Please take a look at the following
detail information:

The whole SBS 2003 SP1 package disks including:

A. Windows Server 2003 SP1
B. Windows SharePoint Services SP1
C. Exchange Server 2003 SP1
D. Outlook 2003 SP1 (applies to each client)
E. Windows XP SP2 (applies to each client)
F. Active Sync 3.8 (applies to each client)
G. SBS 2003 SP1
H. SQL Server 2000 SP4 (Premium only)
I. ISA 2004 (Premium only)

We need apply the A-G service packs one by one and the G: SBS 2003 SP1
should be applied in the end. The H-I service packs can be applied as you
need and there is no order of them.

The premium SP1 disk just has more contents: SQL Server 2000 SP4 and ISA
2004 than that in the standard SP1 disk. What is more, I would like to give
you some information about apply SP1.

What is more, you can refer to the following articles to apply SBS 2003 SP1:

Suggestion 1:
======================
Before you begin to apply SP1, I suggest you follow the below white paper
to backup your SBS server first. So that your business and data could be
kept safe no matter how the troubleshooting process goes.

Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server 2003

Suggestion 2:

It is recommended you apply SBS sp1 follow installation guide provided by
Microsoft and you will not encounter many issues.

You can refer to the following link to apply SBS SP1:

The website includes: What is SP1 for SBS 2003 and what you need to know |
Standard install step-by-step | Premium install step-by-step | Things to do
after the upgrade | Errors that can occur after the upgrade

Suggestion 3:
======================
To prepare Windows Small Business Server to deploy Windows XP SP2 to client
computers that are running Windows XP Professional, follow these steps on
your Windows Small Business Server-based computer:

Please refer to the following KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884032

Note: installing hotfix 884032 may fail with error about fax service; you
can refer to follow steps to resolve:

Resolution:
================
1. Uninstall Fax Service via SBS Setup using component Selection screen,
set the Action to Uninstall for the Fax Service.
- May require you to Set the correct permissions on the Default Domain
Controller User Right Assignments

- under Group policy - Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Local
Policys / User Rights Assignments

2. Complete the wizard.

3. Rename the following keys and files to *.old:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fax
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Fax
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\fax
