I just started getting this error on my backup. Its SP1. I found a KB
hotfix on the microsoft site but it does not apply to SBS 2003, just 2003
Standard edition.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817688

Thank you,

Bob

That hotfix is fairly old, if you got SP1 then your version of NTbackup is
probably newer and has that fix.

You're sure the USB drive isn't simply full? Also, make sure it is
formatted as NTFS. Out of the box they may not be. Reformat it if unsure.

The "D: is not a valid drive" error reminds me of a problem I once had. You
didn't manually edit the .bks file, did you? NTBackup will cough up all
sorts of misleading errors if you try to edit the .bks file by hand, instead
of through NTBackup itself. At first glance the .bks file looks like a
unicode text file, but it's got an extra byte or two that are significant.

Yes, any server 2003 hotfix should be applicable to SBS. The problem with
the hotfix you have is that it is old and has been supersceded by SP1 (ie:
you should already have it). Check the file dates & versions as listed in
the article to make sure your current versions aren't newer.

I would also re-format and do a surface scan on the USB drive.

You
didn't manually edit the .bks file, did you? NTBackup will cough up all
sorts of misleading errors if you try to edit the .bks file by hand,
instead
of through NTBackup itself. At first glance the .bks file looks like a
unicode text file, but it's got an extra byte or two that are
significant.

That hotfix is fairly old, if you got SP1 then your version of NTbackup
is
probably newer and has that fix.

You're sure the USB drive isn't simply full? Also, make sure it is
formatted as NTFS. Out of the box they may not be. Reformat it if
unsure.

I just started getting this error on my backup. Its SP1. I found
a KB
hotfix on the microsoft site but it does not apply to SBS 2003,
just
2003
Standard edition.

Thank you,

You copied 50 gb in this backup. I see it's backup copy #2, so there could
be other backups on the drive as well. Most likely, the drive is full.

How many backup copies is sbsbackup set to store, and what is the capacity
of the drive?

Right click the drive and select properties, to see if it's full. You may
need to reduce the number of backup copies kept, as your data grows. Or, get
larger capacity drive(s).
