I have two set of users for Intranet portal. One is intranet users that
are in Active directory and the others are outside clients. Is it
possible to use a mixed authentication system where it uses Active
directory for intranet users and somethg else for outside users.

Not really. The only other option is to create local users on the SharePoint
server.
