I bought a new Dell server with no OS for my club with the idea of installing
SBS 2000 from my original server onto the new server, moving over the data,
and powering off and selling the old server with no OS. Our organization
cannot afford purchasing SBS 2003 Premium with 10 add'l CALs at this time,
and the new club software we will install on the new server requires SQL 2000.

Is there a way that I can disable some services on the original SBS 2000
server, allowing me to plug the new SBS 2000 server into the network and
complete the installation, migrate the clients to the new box, migrate the
data to the new box, and power off the old box? From what I have read this
may be impossible to do, but I thought I would ask the group because you have
so much experience working with SBS.

Thanks for any help.

If the original SBS was an OEM version you can't move it to new hardware. If
it wasn't OEM a modification of the swing migration might work:
www.sbsmigration.com

On the other hand the version upgrade to SBS 2003 is a bargain price (of
course those additional CALs will add more) and would give you an even
better SBS to use at this point in time.

As indicated, if this was OEM, you cannot move to new computer

If this was retail, look at sbsmigration.com

Thank you both for replying. I will check out sbsmigration.com. My biggest
question is how I can get both servers on the network for the short time it
will take to migrate the data, but I hope to find that out at
sbsmigration.com.

Thanks again!

I used an external USB 2.0 disk to backup data files, exchange stores,
etc.from old server to new server.

Kevin, thank you for the great idea. I will use a USB 2.0 disk to move the
data. Some of the apps will have to be reinstalled on the new server.

I already installed SBS from the original CDs to the new server, and had to
call Microsoft to get a password in order to re-install the CALs that I had.
I will recreate everyones accounts and give them new passwords.

This forum has been a great help to me in this transition.
