Unknown user name or password when joining the domain |
|
|
I have one Windows 2000 machine that will not join my domain, I have gone as
far as reimaging the machine and it still will not join, I get the message
that there is an unknown user name of bad password when trying to join.
Yesterday someone suggested that I try nltest to see what was going on, when
I query the server it comes back with the message:
I_NetLogonControl Failed: Status=5 0x5 Error_Access_Denied
I then attempted to reset it and it comes back with the message:
I_NetLogonControl Failed: Status=1717 0x6B5 RPC_S_Unknown_If
Does anyone have any clue where I go from here?

Remove from the domain. Delete the computer object from AD, allow for
replication and then join to the domain again.

It doesn't have to be in the computers container. It could have been moved.
Search for it (make sure you search for computers and not users) and delete
it. It will have the same name as your computer's hostname.

Paul,
Excuse me for being dumb, but I do a search for it on the domain
controller, I do a start, search, computers and I find it, but there is no
option for me to delete it, I right click on the object and no luck, am I
looking in the wrong place or am I doing something else wrong?

Okay, in active directory I did a find, on computers and I searched the
entire directory, I found nothing with the machine name at all, what am I
missing?

I looked in active directory and there is no object under computers with the
name of the machine that I am trying to get to join, I did a find on the
entire active directory and there is nothing there with the name of the
machine I am trying to get to join

This is what was done to fix the problem:
Click on Start
Settings - Control Panel
Adminisinstrative Tools
Local Security Policy
Local Policies
Security Options
Lan Manager Authentication Level
Changed to Send NTLMv2 Response only / refuse LM & NTLM
This was all done on the client machine.
Is there anything that can be done on the server to prevent this from
happening again?

You can try defining that as a GPO. But without seeing your setup I can't
see what was wrong. Glad you got it sorted though.
