I have a site with 2 servers. They were properly licensed, I purchased both
SBS 2000 and server 2000 (serving the role of Terminal Server). I used the
same media to install both servers. On the SBS, I did the full SBS 2000
install. On the terminal server, I used the same media, but only did the
base OS install. It has all worked fine for years. NOW - I have
successfully in-place upgraded the SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. Next - I want to
upgrade the terminal server 2000 to server 2003. When I try to run the
install, I get a message that this upgrade connot proceed.

Is there a reg change or a file change that will solve this.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff Kite

Have you licensed your Standard Windows 2003 Server? You will need purchase
a License for this and media kit. You should also be aware that Terminal
Server Licensing has changed in Server 2003. You will need to purchase
separate TS CALS for this to work properly.

I'm going to be more blunt
You're first set up was completely illegal...well ok, your SBS server was
probably ok
But you cannot use the SBS media to install additional servers..never could.

So, buy yourself a legal copy of windows server 2003 and off you go.

OK Cris and John. Your bluntness was of no help. As I indicated, this
installation was properly licensed, and I have both media sets. I just did
not bother to open the server 2000 media to install the terminal server. The
SBS 2000 media installed and worked just fine (for years).

Now - if someone has a suggestion on how to get SBS 2000 base OS install
(which is currently acting as a terminal server) to inplace upgrade to server
2003 - that would be very helpfull.

Well, you've now learned that the media sets are NOT the same. And unless
somebody knows something different, I'm afraid you may have to start from
scratch on that TS. But let me see what else we can find out for you.

Well Pardon Kevin and I for being blunt...again.
And I would suggest that if you read the EULA on your SBS media you'd find
that you can't legally use that media on a second server.

This has been passed around in the back channels and the consensus is that
there is no solution other than to format the drive and start over.

Well you should have taken as much time to read the posting as you took to
read the EULA and you would have seen that the guy said he had purchased
licenses for both server, just simply did not use the second set of software,
therefore, there has been NO licensing violation and nothing illegal about it.

Sorry Kathy as Cris and the others have said you can't use the SBS media to
install only the Windows server portion on another server hardware and the
OP is being bitten now by his failure to abide by that. If he had originally
opened his properly licensed Windows server software and installed that all
would be fine.

Kathy, don't mean to dump on anyone, but using the SBS media to setup a
Windows only system is not only wrong, but as he found out, causes problems
in the long run. I truly wish there was an easier solution to provide him
for this situation, but there simply isn't -- he's going to need to reformat
and reload.
