Is there any info on best practices to prohibit all IM use with Group
policy?

I don't know of any documented practices, but I haven't looked. We allow
it.

However, you should look at Software Restriction policies to block all of
the major IM applications. That isn't going to help with web-based IM
though. You will need a content filter on your proxy server for this.
Something like SurfControl, Web Sweeper, WebSense, etc.
