A couple of weeks ago I noticed that one of my domain controllers(DC2)
would fail on both a netdiag or dcdiag. The main problem was that it
couldn't find a record of it's GUID dns name but it could resolve it by
IP. Everything else seemed to be working fine as far as I can tell.
Our other domain controller(DC1) did not have the same problem.
Digging deeper I discovered that neither of the domain controllers had
the GUID or GC info in the _msdcs folder. DC1 had the info though in
it's Cached Lookup folder. To resolve the problem I ended up
temporarily pointing DC2 to our forest root domain controller.

We have a single forest with 4 domains. We are running Windows 2003 in
the forest and I believe most of the domains are there too. We are
still at a 2000 forest and domain functional level though. Shouldn't
the GUID and GC info be in dns on these domain controllers? I've tried
the usual things to populate it there...restarting netlogon, rebooting
the DCs, netdiag /fix..etc.

Anyone have any ideas why the GC and GUID cname stuff would not be in
the _msdcs dns folder in this scenario?
