can you map to a cname or host name? |
|
|
let's say i have a file server called 'fs001', that's the host name for that
server. i create an alias in dns called 'fileserver' that points to 'fs001'.
can i then map a drive letter using the cname? i've tried and i can't. i
can ping it just fine, and connect using RDC, but i can't map to it.
thanks for any and all help.

The following KB article describes how to disable strict name checking.
Connecting to SMB share on a Windows 2000-based computer or a Windows Server
2003-based computer may not work with an alias name
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281308
The solution you're proposing works nicely for me, especially for print
servers.
Hope this helps
