I need help for a temporary solution |

We are going to be looking into NLB for a permanent solution, but I
need to see if I can set up a temporary solution.
We are upgrading our Application server to a new box. The application
is a Java/Apache based application that is all on one server, and will
be transferred to the new server. Naturally, that's not the scope of
this newsgroup, but there is a kink that is related.
We have a ton of reports and databases that connect externally using
the machine's name. Right now, our current server is named "Jomar" and
has a specific IP address. The current server is going to be relegated
to backup status for testing purposes only.
Is there any way, maybe through DNS or whatever, to have the name
"Jomar" be the name of the new server with the old server taking on a
different name, without causing a mass disruption in the network? I
have to minimize downtime in the switch over, but there are hours where
we are not in operation that I could do as you tell me to do.
Our network is an Active Directory domain with a Windows 2003 Standard
Server as the primary and a Windows 2000 Standard Server as the backup.
The alternative, pointing all the databases to the new server and IP
address and name, is feasible, but only as a last resort. We need this
server up and running kind of soon.
Eventually, I'd like to use NLB and have the name "JOMAR" and an IP
address point to either the new or old server, but I'm going to have to
get external help on that.
If you have any ideas, please let me know. |

Just name the old machine "Jomar-old" and name new machine "Jomar". You can
even change the IP#s so that the new one uses the old one's previous
address.

I guess I've had bad experiences renaming machines in the past where it |
would refuse to rename the machine without a lot of headache, but that
was an NT 4 domain, not an AD domain.
Do I just "rename or join a domain" from the "system" part of Control
Panel in 2000? The IP address is fixed, anyway (requirement of
Tomcat), but the machine name is not. |

If it isn't hooked up, then nothing you do is going to be a valid test if it
works or not, and authentication will not work if it is not hooked up,...and
authentication isn't going to work as expected if the machine isn't joined
to the Domain.

Okay, when I joined the BADGER domain and gave the machine a temporary
IP address, I pinged the server name (it's called JOMAR-NEW for the
moment until I get the software installed), it resolved to the old
address, not the new one. Pinging the IP address directly does get a
response, but how do I get it so that when I ping the machine name, it
resolves to the new address and doesn't time out?

Cancel that. It just took a few minutes (another server on the
network, in fact the one this new one is replacing, saw it with the
correct IP address) and now it resolves to the new IP.

Yes, there is a lag in there where the DNS (and maybe WINS) has to catch up
with it and correct their "database entries" which may still show the old
name-to-IP relationship. "Network Places" also has to take time to be
updated from a new "browse list" (it doesn't use DNS or WINS).

I would take the old server offline and test with the new server named
JOMAR. If anything doesnt work you can simply turn the old back on and
all is good.
