Hi,

I'm using SBS2003, Swedish version, so forgive me if the below translations
maybe aren't accurate in English.

For almost all applets in the server management console I get the following
error:

[Dialog title:] Script error in Internet Explorer
Line: 300
Character: 4
Error: The object does not support the property or method.
Code: 0
URL: --mmc:{<various_guid_numbers_depending_on_what_I_click}
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
[Yes] [No]

Only some of the text on each page is displayed, e.g. the Users applet
displays the left-hand menu text (add user, change password, etc) but no
user list. The top banner image is replaced with the standard red X
indicating the image cannot be found.

My assumption was that this had something to do with IE security settings,
so for testing purposes I set them to really low values, but that had no
effect. I cannot recall having installed anything special on the server the
last few weeks, and unfortunately I don't use the server management that
often so I can't tell exactly how long the problem has been there - but at
least for a few days.

Internet searches do not reveal any useful hints on the cause of this error,
neither do searches in this excellent newsgroup.

Any clues?

Thanks,
Christopher Carlander

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for using SBS newsgroup!

For your SBS 2003 is a non-English version. I suggest that you contact the
local CSS for support since different versions may have different issue and
solutions and this newsgroup is for English version support. The reason why
we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most dedicated pool
of respondents, and other partners who the newsgroups regularly can either
share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Also, this
is to make sure that the responders can better track the problem Thank you
for your understanding.

Additionally I would like to give you some general suggestions to the issue
for your reference:

I. Please refer to the following steps to clear cache from the
client/IIS/ISA.

1. From the client computers:

a. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
b. Click the General tab, and then click Delete Files.
c. Click OK.

[Note:] It's important to ensure that no connection is active or attempted
between the time you start clearing the cache files, and the time you are
finished clearing them (from all locations).

2. From the IIS server (the SBS server):

a. Clear the IIS server files: Go to your %windows%\IIS Temporary
Compressed Files directory *. Select all of the content in this directory
and delete it.
b. Go to a command prompt, type "iisreset".

3. From the ISA server:

a. Stop the Web Proxy service.
b. Locate the Urlcache folder.
c. From the multiple files in this folder, locate the *.cdat file in this
folder.
d. Delete the *.cdat file.
e. Start the Web Proxy service.

Please also refer to:

301471 How to Delete the Web Cache on Internet Security and Acceleration
Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=301471

[Note] Please also check if OfficeScan or URLScan is installed on the SBS
server. These components will also cause the same problem.

In addition, third party pop-up block software will also cause the issue.

II. Please check whether you've applied Hotfix 831464.

FIX: IIS 6.0 compression corruption causes access violations
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831464/en-us

Please download and apply the hotfix:

Update for Windows Server 2003: KB831464
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?amp;amp;displaylang=en&famil
yid=0bc9b5bc-a094-49bf-89a5-c8a2d32345a2&displaylang=en

[Note] If the hotfix is not able to be installed, please follow the
instruction described in the above KB to solve the issue.

Then, clear the IIS server files.

1. Go to your "%SystemRoot%\IIS Temporary Compressed Files" (C:\WINDOWS\IIS
Temporary Compressed Files or C:\WINNT\IIS Temporary Compressed Files)
directory.
2. Select all of the content in this directory and delete it.
3. Click Start->Run, type "iisreset" (without the quotes) and click OK to
restart the IIS services.

At the client side:

1. Open IE, and go to Tools -> Internet Options.
2. Select Delete Files, check "Delete all offline files" and click OK to
confirm that you want to delete the content. Then check if the issue
disappears.

III. Based on my research, some third party firewalls or antivirus programs
may cause this issue. So I suggest that we uninstall the firewalls and
antivirus programs on the problematic system and test again whether the
problem still exists.

Please note that simply closing or disabling the antivirus software may not
close the process running on the background.

IV. If this issue still occurs, I suggest that we perform a clean boot of
your system to identify any drivers or programs that may be interfering
with the normal operation of the computer.

A clean boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that
are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device
drivers or programs that are installed in your computer. To do this, please
refer to the following steps:

1го Run MSCONFIG.EXE.
2го In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All".
3. In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during
start-up.)
4. Restart the computer and check whether the problem still persists.

If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.

I hope the information above is helpful. I am happy to be assistance of you!

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

Hi,

Unfortunately the hints didn't help me, I still face the same problems. I
have even re-installed the entire server components pack, but that did not
help either.

I don't believe this is really a language-related issue, but I will anyway
contact the local support to see what can be done. In the meantime, I'm open
to new suggestions.

Thanks a lot for your support.

Solved the problem by making a "repair install" of Windows Server.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for your update. I am glad to know that things are getting fine now.
However the solution seems to be weird. Technical speaking, since your SBS
server box is a DC, it is not recommended that recovery it using Repair
install method. You can monitor your server for some time to avoid any
unexpected thing happen.

What is more, I suggest that you schedule a backup task to avoid unexpected
thing happens. For your convenience, I list the Microsoft white paper link:

Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server 2003

I am glad to be assistance of you!

Solved the problem by making a "repair install" of Windows Server.

Hi,

Unfortunately the hints didn't help me, I still face the same problems.
I
have even re-installed the entire server components pack, but that did
not
help either.

I don't believe this is really a language-related issue, but I will
anyway
contact the local support to see what can be done. In the meantime, I'm
open to new suggestions.

Thanks a lot for your support.

Regards,
Christopher

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for using SBS newsgroup!

For your SBS 2003 is a non-English version. I suggest that you contact
the
local CSS for support since different versions may have different issue
and
solutions and this newsgroup is for English version support. The reason
why
we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most dedicated
pool
of respondents, and other partners who the newsgroups regularly can
either
share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Also,
this
is to make sure that the responders can better track the problem Thank
you
for your understanding.

Additionally I would like to give you some general suggestions to the
issue
for your reference:

I. Please refer to the following steps to clear cache from the
client/IIS/ISA.

1. From the client computers:

a. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
b. Click the General tab, and then click Delete Files.
c. Click OK.

[Note:] It's important to ensure that no connection is active or
attempted
between the time you start clearing the cache files, and the time you
are
finished clearing them (from all locations).

2. From the IIS server (the SBS server):

a. Clear the IIS server files: Go to your %windows%\IIS Temporary
Compressed Files directory *. Select all of the content in this
directory
and delete it.
b. Go to a command prompt, type "iisreset".

3. From the ISA server:

a. Stop the Web Proxy service.
b. Locate the Urlcache folder.
c. From the multiple files in this folder, locate the *.cdat file in
this
folder.
d. Delete the *.cdat file.
e. Start the Web Proxy service.

Please also refer to:

301471 How to Delete the Web Cache on Internet Security and Acceleration
Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=301471

[Note] Please also check if OfficeScan or URLScan is installed on the
SBS
server. These components will also cause the same problem.

In addition, third party pop-up block software will also cause the
issue.

II. Please check whether you've applied Hotfix 831464.

FIX: IIS 6.0 compression corruption causes access violations
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831464/en-us

Please download and apply the hotfix:

Update for Windows Server 2003: KB831464

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?amp;amp;displaylang=en&famil
yid=0bc9b5bc-a094-49bf-89a5-c8a2d32345a2&displaylang=en

[Note] If the hotfix is not able to be installed, please follow the
instruction described in the above KB to solve the issue.

Then, clear the IIS server files.

1. Go to your "%SystemRoot%\IIS Temporary Compressed Files"
(C:\WINDOWS\IIS
Temporary Compressed Files or C:\WINNT\IIS Temporary Compressed Files)
directory.
2. Select all of the content in this directory and delete it.
3. Click Start->Run, type "iisreset" (without the quotes) and click OK
to
restart the IIS services.

At the client side:

1. Open IE, and go to Tools -> Internet Options.
2. Select Delete Files, check "Delete all offline files" and click OK to
confirm that you want to delete the content. Then check if the issue
disappears.

III. Based on my research, some third party firewalls or antivirus
programs
may cause this issue. So I suggest that we uninstall the firewalls and
antivirus programs on the problematic system and test again whether the
problem still exists.

Please note that simply closing or disabling the antivirus software may
not
close the process running on the background.

IV. If this issue still occurs, I suggest that we perform a clean boot
of
your system to identify any drivers or programs that may be interfering
with the normal operation of the computer.

A clean boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs
that
are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device
drivers or programs that are installed in your computer. To do this,
please
refer to the following steps:

1го Run MSCONFIG.EXE.
2го In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All".
3. In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically
during
start-up.)
4. Restart the computer and check whether the problem still persists.

If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related
to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG
tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.

I hope the information above is helpful. I am happy to be assistance of
you!

Hi,

I'm using SBS2003, Swedish version, so forgive me if the below
translations
maybe aren't accurate in English.

For almost all applets in the server management console I get the
following
error:

[Dialog title:] Script error in Internet Explorer
Line: 300
Character: 4
Error: The object does not support the property or method.
Code: 0
URL: --mmc:{<various_guid_numbers_depending_on_what_I_click}

My assumption was that this had something to do with IE security
settings,
so for testing purposes I set them to really low values, but that had no
effect. I cannot recall having installed anything special on the server
the
last few weeks, and unfortunately I don't use the server management that
often so I can't tell exactly how long the problem has been there - but
at
least for a few days.

Internet searches do not reveal any useful hints on the cause of this
error,
neither do searches in this excellent newsgroup.

Any clues?

Thanks,
Christopher Carlander
