I'm currently operating Sharepoint Services 2003 with Microsoft SQL Server
2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) (WMSDE) --

Can I upgrade to the new SQL Server 2005 - Express edition?
- If so, how?
- If not, why not?

The "why not" is probably because SQL Server 2005 Express has some size
limits that WMSDE doesn't have.

Less I suspect than MSDE 2.0 had, but still.

Express has a DB size limit of 4GB, with support for 1 processor and 1GB of
RAM. WMSDE has no such limits so it might be a retrograde step for you.
