Please Confirm: Sharepoint Indexing still does NOT index com |
|
|
Greetings esteemed Sharepointers,
Can anyone confirm this - Sharepoint still does NOT index common MS
Office properties including Title, Subject, Author, Manager, Company,
Category, Keywords and - most importantly - Comments?
I recall learning awhile back that Sharepoint indexing services did not
index these properties, but I thought they'd long sinced fixed that
oversight. Now I'm hearing it still has not been fixed, and that the
only properties which are indexed are those which are actually defined
and populated in Sharepoint document libraries...
Can anyone off current status on this?
Thanks,

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 DOES index Office properties. What you might
be hearing is that inbuilt office properties are NOT promoted into columns
within a document library (Title being the only exception). Custom
properties are promoted (and demoted) as long as a corresponding column has
been defined in the document library (although be aware that using the
Upload document option through the browser does NOT promote so you need to
use either Save As from teh app or use multiple upload or Explorer view!)

Hi KL,
Thank you for the clarification. I'm not sure what you mean by term
"promoting" - do you mean "propagating", as in "propagating the value
of the 'Company' document property to (say) a corresponding 'Company'
Document Library column?
Looking forward to your reply,

Yes - the terms promoting/demoting are commonly used to refer to making sure
a property exists both in the document and the database. Propagating also
makes sense (in fact more sense since promoting generally means you move
something up but you are not in this case!)
