Logon Failure when trying to join the domain |
|
|
When I try to join a Windows 2000 machine to the domain I get the followin
error:
Network Identification
Logon Failure: Unknown user name or bad password
I can log onto the domain on any other machine that is currently joined to
the domain using the administartor password that I am attempting to use to
join this computer to the domain.
I can ping the domain controller and the default gateway.
The only thing that I can think of is that a couple of weeks ago the domain
controller went down hard and something in active directory got hosed up when
it came back up. I have tried resetting the password on the administrators
account, all to no avail. If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly
appreciated.

If you're experiencing problems with just one machine it could be an issue
with the machines secure channel. Use NLTEST [1] to query the secure
channel. Reset it if it is 'broken'. You can use NLTEST, NETDOM or DSA.MSC
to reset. If that doesn't work (it sometimes doesn't), you'll have to
disjoin the domain, delete the computer account and join again.

The problem is the computer is not even on the domain, so I cannot disjoin
the domain, I tried manually adding the computer account but that does
nothing either., I will check the secure channel, but does it have one if it
has never been joined to the domain?

Correct. No domain member, no secure channel.
Have a look at the NETSETUP.LOG file to see what is going on. You'll find
it under %systemroot%\debug
