I have read many posts, researched the docs, and viewed some webcasts but
still do not know the straight forward approach to upgrading my servers. I
would appreciate any evaluation and advice into my particular path. We have 3
servers running Server 2000 standard edition that I would like to migrate to
Server 2003 standard. I generally follow the fresh install approach to
upgrading OS and would most likely want to do the same with these servers.
Without the benefit of a new server to move in and promote as the 2003 DC how
should I proceed to get my network upgraded? Clients are mostly XP pro with a
few 2k pro. I plan to get done over holiday shutdown so I will have several
days to accomplish.

Server A: SQL 2000, MS Great Plains

Server B: Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS, Wins, ASA Application database (may
need to be configured for 2003 terminal server - Application Mode)

Server C: Sybase application database

Hi Shays,

My understanding is you don't want to add another server into the domain
and upgrade the 3 servers to Windows 2003.

Based on my experience, we should upgrade DC first (server B)

Then Server A or Server C either will be OK.

I wonder if you have any concerns or questions about this steps. Please let
me know in detail and I am able to be of assistance.

One major question is how to backup the Active Directory that is on server B.
Do I install Server 2k on say an unused workstation, turn on DNS, make it a
domain controller, sync up, promote it, take offline, migrate it to 2003,
install 2003 on server B, make it a domain controller, sync up to the backup
directory service that is now on this old workstation, then promote server B?
Are there steps missing? Am I completely wrong and there is a different
process to follow? Will clients have to rejoin the domain? Will I be able to
leave all naming and IP addresses the same for this conversion?

I could do that, but isn't it usually recommended to do a fresh install of
Operating Systems versus upgrading?

We only have one domain. Is there a procedure for saving the current active
directory when all of the servers in the same and only domain are going to
get a fresh installed OS?

perform a migration between 2 domains.
