Change Time [WILDPACKET] |
|
|
We would like our note book users to change their time zone settings bcos
they travel a lot. The users have no local admin rights but I have done a
security template where they can change the time on their local computers and
can also change time zone too.
I do not want them to change the time. I only want them to change the time
zone??
Please advise how can I achieve this, I was looking around but cannot seem
to fine anything. I only want them to change the time zone not the time but
changing the time zone will also change their local time too .. hmmmmm.
Advise please.
Thanks Much! |

Changing the timezone doesn't affect the time. Sure, the local time is
going to be different, but Windows works with GMT (or UNC I think they call
it), so it doesn't matter what timezone is used.
As for how to do one and not the other, I don't think you can stipulate
that. The right in question does both. Therefore I'm afraid you either
have to trust them or you don't.

Thank you for your response Paul.
I was wondering if there is a registery entry which could just grey out the
Date&Time Tab and let the Time zone tab be enabled????

Well. It changes the time from the user's perspective. It localises it -
based on where you are in relation to GMT. From Windows' point of view, the
time never changes - Windows only works in GMT.

You mean changing the time zone does not change the time????

That would be \\hh.min.sec ??? ;-)
UTC or "Coordinated Universal Time" = GMT
Why it's not C.U.T., I dunno, or how we now know no one else in the Universe
uses something else.

Valid point. What if something else has a better system of time that is
also called UTC? ;-)

My proposed "GTC" (Geo Time Coordinated) was met with only laughter. Maybe
they thought I was talking about an automobile. Probably a language
translation thing, I don't know.
For the record UTC is human Earth time and UT1 is Earth's Real time. UTC
gets adjusted when the difference with UT1 approaches +/- .9 seconds. Oh,
and I was "out of band" corrected that UTC does not "equal" GMT and that GMT
is obsolete and should no longer be used.
I wonder if anyone submitted a bug to that effect on Vista beta 1?

As I heard it, the UK was the source of all time. But I also heard, and
UK'ers please correct if wrong, that UK time in winter is not GMT.
(I'm soooo confused!)

GMT will never be obsolete. UTC sucks. GMT rocks. Britain is the centre
of the Universe! ;-)

Otherway round. It is GMT in the winter. In the summer we go into British
Summer Time (BMT) which is GMT+1, AKA daylight saving time.
